Production techniques: How to create catchy melodies

Creating dynamic chord progressions is one of the great challenges in electronic music production. To avoid monotony, there is an advanced technique that allows for the complete transformation of the harmonic meaning of a sequence without altering the original notes of the chords. This method is based on the strategic modification of the bassline, achieving surprising results with very simple progressions.

A clear example of this methodology is found in the track "Free Your Mind", a collaboration between producers Prospa and Cloonee. In this track, the initial harmonic structure starts from a base in the key of B minor. The traditional way to add a bass to this sequence would be to use the root notes of each chord. However, this conventional approach can be predictable and lacking in groove after several repetitions on the dancefloor.

To add more interest to the composition, the technique proposes using other notes belonging to the same musical scale. By employing notes that are already part of the original chord structure but placing them in the low register, harmonic inversions are generated. This resource provides a different nuance and refreshes the listener's perception, maintaining tonal coherence but breaking the linearity of the established rhythmic pattern.

The qualitative leap comes when introducing notes in the bass that are absent in the original chords, resorting to borrowings from other musical modes. One can observe the inclusion of a C natural in the bass, coming from the B Phrygian mode. This reharmonization alters the interpretation of the upper chord, generating a very attractive tension. This resource, also used in classics like "I Remember" by Deadmau5 and Kaskade, opens an infinite range of creative possibilities to build rich musical lines designed to maintain energy in the club.
