The Exosphere lit up before the venue

On July 4, 2023, still without an audience inside, Sphere illuminated its Exosphere for the first time: 54,000 m² of exterior LED —about 580,000 square feet— that turns the building into a programmable screen visible for miles from the Strip. Designed by Populous together with the Venetian Resort, on 7.3 hectares ceded next to the expo, the venue stands 112 meters high and 157 meters in diameter and was built for 2.3 billion dollars, the most expensive entertainment complex in the history of the Las Vegas valley. Madison Square Garden had announced it as MSG Sphere; when Sphere Entertainment Co. was born, the name remained Sphere.

A 16K average and 167,000 invisible drivers

The room does not surround the audience at 360 degrees: the capacity covers about two-thirds of the interior and the rest is the stage. Above, a 160,000 square foot LED mesh manufactured by SACO Technologies reaches 16K resolution. Behind that acoustically permeable surface works Sphere Immersive Sound, the HOLOPLOT X1 system with 3D beamforming and wave field synthesis: about 1,600 fixed modules, 300 mobile ones, and 167,000 drivers. Ten thousand seats incorporate haptics and infrasound; the venue adds wind, fog, scent, and other 4D effects. The maximum capacity reaches 20,000 people.

From U2 to Anyma, without becoming a nightclub

It opened on September 29, 2023 with forty nights of U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere. It is not a typical nightclub, but dance electronic music has found a massive stage here: Anyma was the first club act to sign a residency —Afterlife, The End of Genesys—, followed by Unity (Insomniac × Tomorrowland) and Illenium. In 2024 it led Billboard Boxscore with 420.5 million dollars and 1.3 million tickets, the highest annual gross for a venue on that list. Residencies by Dead & Company, Eagles, Backstreet Boys, or Metallica coexist with that programming.

4D Cinema, bridge to the Venetian, and a schedule of shows

On October 6, 2023, it premiered Postcard from Earth, by Darren Aronofsky, as the first Sphere Experience, and later The Wizard of Oz, with more than 3.6 million viewers, with fire, snow, wind, and seats that you can feel. The building relies on the Venetian: a pedestrian bridge of about 300 meters connects to the expo, there is VIP access via Sands Avenue, its own parking, 23 suites, and a VIP club in the basement. It operates according to shows and residencies, not with a fixed nightclub schedule.
