Biography of Ziggo Dome
A black box that is not a dome
The name Ziggo Dome promises a vault, but the building responds with the opposite: a black block measuring 90 by 90 meters and 30 meters high, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architekten next to the Johan Cruijff ArenA, in the Amsterdam-Zuidoost district. What looks like an opaque cube by day turns into a 360° LED facade at night, about 23 meters high and over 400 meters long, a continuous video wall that the Dutch press dubbed Las Vegas on the banks of the Amstel in the summer of 2012.
Made for amplified pop
The venue was born with the working title Music Dome, sketched on the back of a cigar box, and opened on June 24, 2012 with Marco Borsato. Two days later, Pearl Jam arrived. The brief was precise: a single-purpose hall for amplified music, with acoustic material on the walls, stands, and ceiling that cuts reverberation down to a dry sound, designed so that drums and pop do not get diluted. The skin of light is decoupled from the black box, like a bell, so that the concert does not escape into the neighborhood. Tours bring their own system; what the building provides is the acoustics, sightlines, and two U-shaped rings over a central floor for thousands of people.
From the Bijlmer to the world circuit
With a capacity of 17,000 spectators—the largest indoor concert venue in the Netherlands—the hall immediately fit into the tours of Madonna, Lady Gaga, U2, Adele, or Beyoncé. In the first half of 2015, it was already ranked as the fifth concert hall in the world by tickets sold. In 2013, it hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards. It is not a club with a weekly calendar: it is the arena where Dutch pop and clubbing scale up to stadium format, a metro stop away from the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station.
Arena-sized electronic music
Since the inaugural year, electronic music has occupied the cube. Swedish House Mafia closed their One Last Tour in December 2012; Headhunterz premiered Hard with Style; Dirty Dutch filled the hall during that year's ADE; Above & Beyond celebrated ABGT 200. Armin van Buuren has turned the venue into his theater: eleven shows and nearly 150,000 attendees through 2022, with productions that mix trance, orchestra, and visuals. In 2025, the Vinyl Room opened, presented as the first vinyl listening bar in Europe inside the venue, with Hardwell on the decks for the opening before Lady Gaga.
A cube that keeps on running
It remains the benchmark concert hall in the country: two rings, seventeen food points, Business Club, cloakroom, and a schedule that changes every night. The building hosts sports and fairs, but its public identity is something else: a black box designed so that pop, rock, and electronic music sound crisp for 17,000 people.
