The stadium that ID&T turned into a nightclub

Duncan Stutterheim, founder of ID&T, summarized the commission with an idea that still defines the venue: to turn the Amsterdam-Zuidoost bowl into the biggest nightclub in the world. Between 2000 and 2017, Sensation occupied the then Amsterdam ArenA every first Saturday of July. The audience dressed in white, the stadium was decorated in the same color, and the dance floor extended across the pitch and stands, with around 40,000 to 45,000 tickets for sale. On July 8, 2017, The Final was held there, the last edition in Amsterdam, with Hardwell, Axwell Λ Ingrosso, Fedde Le Grand, or Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. That night closed an eighteen-year cycle in which the venue stopped being just a football stadium to become a club of monumental scale.

A flying saucer over the highway

Rob Schuurman and Sjoerd Soeters designed a volume of concrete and steel that, at night, reads like a flying saucer. The building was erected between 1993 and 1996 above the Burgemeester Stramanweg, with a Transferium parking lot under the stands. Queen Beatrix inaugurated it on August 14, 1996, and three weeks later, Tina Turner was the first pop artist on its stage. The retractable roof, two leaves of 37 by 120 meters and 520 tons, opens or closes in eighteen minutes. In 2017, Ampco Flashlight installed a d&b audiotechnik Y-Series system: 216 Yi8 speakers in 18 flown clusters, 54 30D amplifiers, ArrayProcessing, and MediaMatrix control, with rotating arrays for football, concerts, and delays.

AMF, the big night of ADE

Since 2014, the Amsterdam Music Festival has been held at this venue during the Amsterdam Dance Event. The ArenA itself estimates the AMF audience at about 40,000 attendees under one roof. The 2026 edition is announced for October 24, with David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, or Amelie Lens. In 2017, van Buuren signed The Best of Armin Only here. In July 2024, the stadium hosted Verknipt ArenA, an indoor hard techno rave on an arena scale. The venue supports three stage geometries: north end stage, central stage, and panoramic stage to the east.

Thirty years with the Cruijff name

On April 25, 2018, the birthday of Johan Cruijff, Frank Rijkaard presented the current name and logo. The stadium remains the home of Ajax and a regular venue for the Dutch national team, and has hosted the 1998 Champions League final and the 2013 Europa League final. Today it has 76 skyboxes, 22 conference rooms, more than 4,200 solar panels, and a 3 MW battery. It receives more than two million visitors per year. In 2026, it celebrates three decades as Amsterdam's great container for football and electronic music.
