When AZF took the banks of the Garonne

On September 21, 2001, the explosion of the AZF factory not only overshadowed Toulouse: it wiped off the map the venue that, since 1983, had turned a former nightclub on the chemin des Étroits into an unavoidable stage for French rock and electronics. Hervé Sansonetto, at the helm of the place from day one, took six years to turn the key again. On September 21, 2007, at almost the same time, Le Bikini reopened next to the Canal du Midi, in Ramonville-Saint-Agne. The cube of wood, concrete, and iron—conceived by GGR Architectes and Didier Joye—is not a simple relocation: it is the continuity of a name that, in the words of its director, was never conjugated in the past tense.

In Bikini Dura Rock

In June 1983, that riverside nightclub began to intersperse concerts. From two or three groups a month, it went to a fortnight, sometimes five or six nights in a row. The name evokes the painting 'Les filles en bikini' by Clovis Trouille; the motto 'In Bikini Dura Rock' summarizes the intersection between dancefloor and stage. Between 1983 and 2001, more than 5,000 groups paraded through: Rita Mitsouko, Noir Désir, Mano Negra, Jeff Buckley, Tool, Muse, Coldplay, Placebo, Korn, Jeff Mills, St Germain, or Carl Cox. After AZF, some 500 touring concerts—at the Ramonville party hall, Café Rex, Zénith, and other venues—kept the lineup alive until the resurrection.

The cube of fifteen hundred bodies

The current venue admits from 400 to 1,500 people on two levels, with 1,859 m² of space and a 288 m² stage. It kept the swimming pool and palm trees from the original location. In summer, Le Petit Bikini turns the terrace and pool into an open-air space: restaurant, DJ, and swimming at sunset; in 2025, some 30,000 visitors passed through there. Inside, concerts coexist with techno, drum and bass, and electro after-parties, especially on Fridays and Saturdays from midnight. In 2019, and again in 2021, Boiler Room recorded one of the most visible electronic snapshots of the Toulouse scene at the venue.

Curiosities and long season

More than 150 dates a year mix rock, pop, rap, and club electronics. The association Les Curiosités, created in 2010, used the venue as a nursery at a popular price: Angèle, Bigflo & Oli, Lomepal, or Clara Luciani passed through those nights before jumping in scale. The Weekend des Curiosités closed its thirteenth and final edition in 2025 in the classic three-day format. The building belongs to Sicoval; it is operated by Sansonetto's team. The season remains that of a contemporary music venue that, more than forty years later, still closes club nights around six in the morning.
