Biography of Substation Seattle

The name of the high-voltage neighbor

Across from the Canal Substation, the electrical substation on NW 45th, a warehouse opened in 2015 that took the neighbor's name and turned it into a club. Dave West, Ken Wallace, and Jeremy Rudo opened the venue with concerts starting in April; the grand opening arrived in June, with Tim Basaraba (TBASA) leading the lineup. The approach was explicit: they didn't want a Belltown club, but a warehouse party with a bar, a capacity of 150 people, and a mix of underground house and techno, rock, punk, metal, shoegaze, and electronic music. In the L-shaped hallway, there were arcade machines and rehearsal rooms. The first season added vinyl on Tuesdays, open mic on Mondays, and, on the last Wednesday, Baby Ketten karaoke. By the first summer, there were already neighbor complaints about the bass. The owners responded that they had soundproofed more than usual and that the venue was located in an industrial zone. The intersection between Fremont and Ballard is what is known as Frelard. The club advertises itself as both a Fremont venue and a Ballard club: the border is the site.

A warehouse that ate the building

The project grew within the same property. Next to the stage was West's Birdhouse studio, and the venue even recorded concerts in multitrack. Over the years, it occupied more space and activity was organized into two rooms, with a stage in both, plus a wooden patio that functions as an open-air anteroom. Smoking and vaping are not allowed inside; on the deck, you can vape. There is no table service, but there are seating areas. Access is 21+ only, with official identification. The schedule is not that of a fixed weekend nightclub: it opens when there is a lineup, often with an early concert and a club night on the same date. Parking is on the street. It is advisable to arrive by public transport, in a group, or in a vehicle with a driver.

The dance floor is not a guest

A KV2 Audio system plays in the rooms: SL412 and subs in the large one, KRIG towers in the main one, with Midas M32 consoles. On that base, live acts and sets fit. The calendar shows it without ambiguity. In a few weeks of 2026, Cradle of Filth or Hulder cross paths with Mall Grab, Skream all night long, Ken Ishii, Josh Baker, Sam Alfred, Jam City, Baauer, Feed Me, or a DJ set by Cut Copy, and a night of TR/ST with Marie Davidson. Events like socialHOUSE bring house music during the week. Electronic music does not rent the site: it shares the address with metal, hip hop, and indie, in a two-room warehouse that continues to function as a concert venue and as a club.
