The Great Northern

Co-founder Chris Smith summarized it bluntly when opening the venue: the sound of Mighty had never convinced them. On that Utah Street warehouse, the Monarch team built The Great Northern in 2016, a club born around a custom Void Acoustics system of 80,000 watts and an idea of a more faithful dancefloor, not just a simple lineup change.

Future Deco on warehouse bones

On September 16, 2016, it opened with Smoke n Mirrors and Thugfucker on the decks. One Hat One Hand converted the Design District venue into an art deco lounge with nine-meter ceilings, two bars—the Daylight Bar with programmable LED stained glass and the velvet Goth Bar—, VIP lounge, coat check with curved windows, and a DJ booth dampened for turntables. The mapping runs along an illustrated wall; a disco ball and a three-story arch organize the view. Upstairs, the Loft functions as a second intimate room, lower and denser than the main dancefloor.

Eighty thousand watts as a thesis

The technical bet was not decorative. Void was installed to correct the deaf reputation of the previous space and became the argument with which the club presents itself: high fidelity at nightclub volume, intended for house, techno, and electronic music in general, but also for live bands. The lighting, projections, and that disco ball complete a venue that is used as much as a weekend club as a concert hall and private rental, with an interior capacity of 700 people.

Programming that doesn't fit into a single genre

Manny Alferez, DJ M3 and the public face of the project, insists on not pigeonholing the room as just a techno or house club. The calendar proves it: from Sasha, Booka Shade, Kittin, Derrick Carter, Lee Foss, Doc Martin, or Miguel Migs to disco nights, drag, pop tributes, and the Art Battle, a live painting combat. The street flagship is Pink Block, the Pride block party next to Polyglamorous. In 2024, it occupied five stages with DJ Holographic, Olof Dreijer, and Ana Matronic. The Design District barely has housing, and that allows for cutting the street and turning the sidewalk into a dancefloor.

City club, not just for one Saturday

The Great Northern remains, first and foremost, an electronic clubbing venue in San Francisco: wide dancefloor, Void at full volume, and a Loft that sweats. At the same time, it functions as infrastructure for local promoters, festival afterparties, and day parties. The lineup changes every week; the room, the system, and that Future Deco aesthetic are what remain.
