When the museum becomes a dancefloor

In the old Barbara Jordan post office building, the night doesn't just open another club: it reprograms the same one. Art Club premiered on December 7, 2024, on the west side of POST Houston, inside the X atrium. Its founder, Kirby Liu, envisions it as an art club where installations can be operated as if they were an instrument.

Liu, also the director of POST, came from the team behind Day for Night, the festival that in 2016 and 2017 occupied that same building, still unconverted, and crossed large-format concerts with light and sound sculpture. Art Club does not repeat that scale. It fixes that audiovisual DNA in a stable venue, with a shorter and more frequent program.

Black box, two speeds

The space functions as a black box: darkness, lasers, LEDs, and strobes, and a path that goes down and up two flights of stairs. At the opening, it occupied about 28,500 square feet—nearly 2,650 square meters—and 13 installations on two floors. The first season brought together works by artists accustomed to light festivals. Nervescape, by Shoplifter, hung masses of neon hair. Layers, by the studio S E T U P, projected three-dimensional rings onto LED meshes and occupied the dance hall, with a booth and bar, so that whoever was DJing could use it as an extension of the set.

That double speed continues to organize the place. In museum mode, the entrance gives access to the exhibitions—the full tour lasts between 90 and 120 minutes—and the Infinity Room is offered separately, with a mirrored floor. In Club Mode, the galleries remain closed unless announced or unless it is VIP access, which does open the pieces during the night. The dancefloor entrance is on the west side, next to the building's docks, and DJ nights run from 22:00 to 03:00.

The dancefloor is in the Club Room, on the south ground floor. The Lounge is the second event space. The maximum capacity of the complex is 575 people: 380 in the Club and 195 in the Lounge. Bar 6½, attached to the club, remains open when there is a set.

Electronics in the center of Houston

The calendar is not locked into a single genre. The club has hosted Boy Harsher, DJ Stingray, and the Australian project X Club. The recent lineup brings together Ben UFO, Andy Stott live, Skream open to close, What So Not, UNIIQU3, and Rene Wise. Several nights are presented with city collectives, especially GULP! and Innerloop Collective, and the dancefloor thus crosses the local techno, house, and club music circuit with international tours.

The second season of exhibitions rotates new works and maintains the Infinity Room as a hallmark of the place. The venue adds a shop, limited parking at POST, accessible access with elevator and accessible restrooms, and bag checks. To move around inside, comfortable shoes are needed and, in the mirror room, clean soles.
