El Sótano

Downstairs in La Latina

A staircase going down separates the noise of the street of Las Maldonadas and the surroundings of Cascorro from a compact, dark, and direct-pulse room. El Sótano works from the logic of the urban refuge: little distance between stage, DJ booth, and public, underground venue aesthetic, and a very immediate relationship with the La Latina neighborhood. The room opened initially in 2015, closed in 2016, and returned to activity in 2020, maintaining that vocation of a small but active space within the Madrid underground scene.

Live acts, DJ booth, and shock culture

Its programming combines concerts, club sessions, and cultural proposals of a close format. In the live part, indie, alternative rock, shoegazing, garage, punk, and black music have had a presence, while the night dance floor moves between house, techno, R&B, afrohouse, and Bakalao rescues. That mix explains its hybrid character: it does not function as a single-color nightclub or as a traditional concert hall, but as a point of friction between emerging bands, DJs, collectives, and club audiences.

A small room with technical ambition

The venue has reinforced its identity with a technical endowment unusual for its scale. The rider describes a MAGA Engineering PA, Midas M32 console, SSL SIX mixer, DJ booth with Pioneer CDJ-3000, Allen & Heath Xone:96, Technics SL-1200 MKII turntables, background LED screen, ceiling pixel mapping, and its own DJ furniture with an integrated screen. That infrastructure allows alternating concerts and clubbing without one of the formats seeming like an addition, supported by mobile lighting, laser, videomapping, and resident backline.

The programmatic underground of Madrid

Through its stage have passed names like Niño de Elche, Morat, Chenoa, Sexy Zebras, La Bien Querida, Tulsa, Mujeres, or Rufus T. Firefly, in addition to milestones linked to the MIN Awards, Ruido Awards, Yago Awards, or Mondo Sonoro. In the electronic aspect, its recent agenda has hosted nights and collectives like Housenation, FREV Techno Club, Danze Afrika, Bakalao, Blaster, or proposals associated with artists like Joyce Muniz, Tuccillo, Svreca, Monty, Nebari, and Gaskón. The result is a room of contained size, central and very programmatic, where physical proximity weighs as much as the lineup.
