The only club on the coast with a secured dance floor

On the Front Marítim of Barceloneta, this venue is, today, the only one on the leisure axis facing the sea with its continuity assured as a nightclub. When the State auctioned the waterfront, the Archer Hotel Capital fund—owner of the Hotel Arts—bid for the property. Costa Este, the tenant of the premises, matched the offer with the right of first refusal: about 13 million euros. Opium, Shôko, and Carpe Diem are still pending lease extensions. Here, the night is not an urban planning parenthesis: it is the use that the operator managed to retain.

Sotavento, the cherries, and the name of KU

Brothers Javier and Ramón Bordas opened Sotavento in 2008 at number 38 of Passeig Marítim. In 2014, they bought the Pacha franchise and on May 28, 2015, they inaugurated the room together with Ricardo Urgell: about 2,000 m² of club and restaurant facing Somorrostro. For a decade, the venue was Pacha Barcelona. During that stage, the dance floor mixed house and electronic music with OFF Week appointments; the Luciano set recorded in 2016 inside the room documents that pulse. After the sale of the Pacha brand in 2017, Costa Este considered that the label had lost its original spirit. On September 15, 2025, the same space was renamed Ku Barcelona, a contemporary reinterpretation of the Ibizan myth of KU (1978-1993). The change incorporated improvements and a new flag; not a different venue. The Barcelona presentation of Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé was in Ibiza, not in this room.

Whites, red, and the Mediterranean as a backdrop

The interior design, by the Costa Este team with Pepe López del Hoyo, works with whites, contrast in red, and organic shapes in the Ibizan style. The covered and uncovered terrace overlooks the sea and houses the Mediterranean and Italian cuisine restaurant of chef Manuel Fernando. At dawn, the same venue operates as a club: VIP areas, booth, and a Main Room that on Mondays plays reggaeton, afrobeat, hip hop, and R&B, and the rest of the week combines electronic music with national and international DJs. On Sundays, the SIGHT party is the most explicit house appointment on the schedule. Open every day. It does not pretend to be a Poblenou afterparty: it is a beachfront club that has been both a showcase for international house and a tourist night machine.
