Nine million facing the sea

The leap of Opium Barcelona was not a cosmetic reform: in October 2007 the Costa Este Group of brothers Ramón and Javier Bordas paid nine million euros for the transfer of the premises of the former Baja Beach Club, on the Passeig Marítim of Barceloneta, and opened a club designed for the outdoors. Ramón Bordas has told it bluntly: when the Barcelona night was concentrated in closed rooms, they wanted the party with the Mediterranean a step away. The calculation was risky and it worked. The venue surpassed in turnover all the previous premises of the group together, employs more than 300 people, and remains the flagship of Costa Este.

Main Room, The Cave, and the terrace at the foot of the beach

The club is better understood as a venue with several environments than as a single dance floor. The Main Room concentrates the headliners; in recent years it has added LED screens for visuals and a redesign of the VIP areas. The Cave tightens the ceiling and hides a more underground DJ booth, with a dark aesthetic. The Terrace is the identity gesture: an outdoor oasis attached to the sand, with views of the Port Olímpic and the Hotel Arts. The Dawn Room functions as VIP with access to the dance floor and terrace. From noon to midnight, the same seafront operates as a restaurant of Mediterranean cuisine.

The WEDJS residency and the international booth

The most documented part of its lineup is large-format electronics. Every summer, on Wednesdays, WEDJS turns the venue into an EDM and house residency that has seated Steve Aoki, DJ Snake, Don Diablo, Claptone, R3HAB, Bob Sinclar, or Armin van Buuren in the booth. WAA covers techno and tech house, and the rest of the week combines commercial house, hits, and urban nights. Avicii, Tiësto, David Guetta, Martin Solveig, or Axwell & Ingrosso have passed through that same dance floor. The result is an international-scale beach club.

Ranking, capacity, and the weekday night

In 2023 the International Nightlife Association placed it as the seventh best nightclub in the world; in 2025 it kept it within the top 10. DJ Mag, in its 2025 Top 100 Clubs, includes it with a published capacity of 3,000 people. It opens every day: from 23:30 to 05:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until 06:00 on Friday and Saturday. Almost twenty years after that open-air bet, Opium Barcelona remains, rather than a party brand, a physical beach venue that programs DJs and does not close during the week.
