The concrete that opened to the Tagus

On the night of September 29, 1998, with Expo '98 about to close, a former 1910 concrete stowage warehouse was filled to the street. The parallelepiped of Cais da Pedra, facing Santa Apolónia and with the Tagus at the window, was Manuel Reis's bet: to take the Lisbon night out of Bairro Alto and measure it on a river scale. The project by Margarida Grácio Nunes and Fernando Sanchez Salvador converted the warehouse into three connected floors, with technical sophistication in air, light, and acoustics designed not to compete with what happened inside.

From Rua da Atalaia to the river scale

Before this house, there was Frágil, opened in 1982 on Rua da Atalaia: a small, almost secret venue where Zé Pedro Moura was already a resident. Lux was not born as a party brand, but as a physical expansion of that idea. Among the founding partners was John Malkovich. The programming is supported by house residents—Rui Vargas, Dexter, Yen Sung, Switchdance, HNRQ, NVNO, Tiago, Varela, Twofold—and an international door that has brought in Dixon, Tale of Us, Adriatique, The Martinez Brothers, Ben Klock, or Freddy K. House, techno, and disco set the pulse, without closing the room to concerts, fado, hip hop, or performances.

The Disco on the ground floor is the black room: custom acoustics, Brazilian wood dancefloor, Funktion-One system with Evo 7E, disco balls, and projectors. One floor up, the Bar starts as a lounge and ends as a dancefloor, with a booth at the audience's height and a balcony over the pier. The Terraço crowns the building with a view of the estuary; it opens from 6:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. There is no VIP area: the house is conceived as a single audience. In 2014, The Guardian placed it among the twenty-five best clubs in Europe.

Life, all ahead

Reis died in March 2018. The venue's motto, taken from Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, remains on the walls: a nossa vida é toda para diante. With Lúcia Azevedo at the helm, Lux Frágil programs from Thursday to Saturday and maintains the double life of a club and concert hall. It remains the anchor of the Lisbon clubbing scene: an industrial frame next to the Tagus where Portugal learned to welcome the world to the dancefloor.
