A music box under Rua do Alecrim

Embedded under the Rua do Alecrim pass, the venue opens up like a stone tunnel: an old 19th-century warehouse converted into an intimate space, with arches, a bar on one side, and a stage at the back. Above, the traffic of Lisbon; inside, a dance floor that for nineteen years mixed concerts and clubbing. Musicbox occupied number 24 of Rua Nova do Carvalho, the Rua Cor-de-Rosa of Cais do Sodré, where the Texas Bar had previously been.

From forgotten port to the epicenter of the independent night

In December 2006, Gonçalo Riscado and Alex Cortez—linked to Rádio Macau—opened the venue when Cais do Sodré was an abandoned port front. Cultural Trend Lisbon did not just program: it became the owner of the property. The bet was an independent programming club on a human scale, halfway between a concert hall and a dance floor, with projections on the back wall and an almost physical proximity between the audience and the artists.

Three hundred concerts, five hundred sessions, and a changing city

The house itself estimated more than 300 concerts and 500 DJ sets per year, about 100,000 annual spectators, and nearly two million admissions throughout its life. Names from electronic music and the club scene passed through the stage—Laurel Halo, RP Boo, Jlin, Bad Gyal, Nick León, Kode9, The Field, Nigga Fox—and a Lisbon generation that used the box as a testing ground: DJ Marfox described it as a learning ground. On Sundays, A Missa do Papi turned the venue into a ritual of afro, hip hop, and house. Since 2014, it was a member of Liveurope and a driving force behind MIL, the Lisbon music convention and festival.

The box turned off on September 15

On September 15, 2025, Musicbox closed permanently. The property was sold to local merchants; the last public night, Last.Day Goodbye, was on the 14th, with a DJ marathon and the last mass. The team and programming moved to Casa Capitão, in Beato: another venue, another geography. In Cais do Sodré, there remains the gap of a room of about 200 square meters and a single floor, in a neighborhood that tourism had emptied of its own nightlife. The box no longer opens. Its legacy is that of a small and demanding hybrid that sustained the independent scene of Lisbon when that street was not yet a set.
