Sala Malavida

A sign with bad timing

Shortly before the pandemic, the sign for Sala Malavida fit the calendar all too well. The venue opened at 13 Rúa Rey Abdullah, in the Riazor area, and immediately collided with the health-related closures. It survived. The programmer David López described a reopening better than expected and identified 2023 as the year the venue would reach cruising speed, with a non-touristy motto: don't look like the rest of the venues in A Coruña and organize nights with up to four bands when it is already difficult to schedule two.

The legacy of Le Club

The address was not new to the scene. Le Club, also known as Le Club Directo, had operated on the same property, a Galician benchmark for mid-capacity concerts with a lineup of pop, rock, indie, electro, hip hop, blues, soul, punk, and folk. The activity of that venue lasted until 2019 and the closure occurred in 2020. Malavida inherited the space and changed the focus: less conventional circuit and more of an underground venue with a local feel, where the audience is just a step away from the stage.

Two hundred people, zero distance

The capacity is consistently set at 200 people. That figure is not just a licensing detail: it is the grammar of the night. The stage is within arm's reach, the bar is part of the same room, and the audience occupies a compact space. Rock and metal, punk and hardcore, rap, R&B, jazz, and rumba live shows have been seen there, in addition to DJ sessions. There is evidence of techno nights, such as Archaic with Liños in 2022, vinyl DJ sets of punk, garage, and soul, freestyle battles, stand-up comedy, and uses for private events or recordings. The access policy is strict: 18+ only.

Programming the city

López insisted on looking at the local scene, both out of commitment to musicians from A Coruña and because that programming attracts an audience from outside. The model mixes offers from promoters with its own lineup. In practice, the schedule is weekly, but not routine: a Thursday of hardcore, a Friday of rap, a Saturday of clubbing, or a jazz session. It does not operate as a nightclub with fixed hours; it functions as a concert hall that, when the time comes, turns into a dance floor.

Riazor, at street level

It remains open, without its own website and with its public identity concentrated on social media. The venue is in the 15004 area, right next to the Finisterre and Riazor axis, with a box office at the door and accessible access. La Malavida does not boast a monumental venue: it sustains live music in a small, central, and still-vibrant space.
