Biography of SEL OCTAGON TOKYO

Under AXALL, opposite Tokyo Midtown

On February 7, 2019, Avex opened a club in the basement of AXALL Roppongi designed as an indoor festival. The club occupies the B1 floor on Gaien-higashi Street, right opposite Tokyo Midtown, and was created to welcome an international audience in the heart of Roppongi. The project, linked to the team behind Octagon Seoul and operated by Avex Entertainment, combines dance floor, art, and technology across 503 square meters. The Main Floor measures approximately 105.5 square meters under a 5.5-meter ceiling; the Gallery Bar, designed to rotate artwork according to the season, occupies 54.1; and a VIP area separates tables from the main crowd. The published capacity is 700 people: 580 in the main room and 120 in the VIP. Nikken Sekkei was involved in the construction. The team envisioned it as a place a hotel concierge would recommend, and shortly after opening, the concierge at The Peninsula was already doing so.

A tuned club, not a catalog system

The sound on the dance floor did not come from a generic package. VOID Acoustics tuned an original system for that Main Floor: four Tri Motion, four Nexus Q for upper bass, and four Nexus X for lower bass, with Air Stream booth monitors, Stasys 118 subwoofers, and a MIDAS PRO1 console. The VIP area also has its own VOID circuit, with Airten V2 and Venu Bass. The DJ booth is equipped with Pioneer CDJ-3000, a DJM-900NXS2, and two Technics SL-1200G turntables. The bar debuted Katsuyuki Seto's 3D Sound theory: ultrasound in eight frequencies, mixed with the music depending on the time and atmosphere, in what the club presented as a world first. Ten KVANT Clubmax 3000 lasers bounce off mirror walls, with design by AIBA. Above the booth, a fine-pitch LED closes the scene; the venue advertises a 240-inch monitor.

Door, table, and code

The opening incorporated palm vein authentication, developed with Fujitsu, to identify the customer and process cashless payments. The current access rule is different: only over 20s, with an official photo ID for everyone. The dress code may deny entry for tracksuits, hoodies, shorts, tank tops, sandals, or visible tattoos. The kitchen was planned with Wise Table Corporation, the group behind the XEX restaurants, and the club maintains a restaurant-level menu. In 2019, there was a bar from Monday to Wednesday and a club from Thursday to Saturday. In 2026, the week is irregular: there are sets from Sunday to Thursday and on weekends, as well as closed nights. When open, the usual closing time is 04:30.

From 68th in DJ Mag to the Ultra afterparty

The inauguration, from February 7 to 10, 2019, opened with Nicky Romero and a block of residents including Shinichi Osawa, Daishi Dance, and KSUKE. Later came Skrillex, Afrojack, and the official afterparties for Ultra Japan and EDC Japan. DJ Mag placed the club at number 68 in the Top 100 Clubs in 2023, at 40 in 2024—the year of the fifth anniversary—and at 50 in 2025. The 2026 season continues in that large-format circuit: Ultra Japan afterparty with R3HAB, sets by Knock2, Eli Brown, Sub Zero Project, or Brooks, along with resident nights. In Roppongi, SEL OCTAGON TOKYO remains Avex's bet on a high-production electronic dance floor with a controlled door.
