The corner Zouk didn't want to leave behind

In December 1996, inside the warehouses on Jiak Kim Street, an MTV bar gave way to a room with a manifesto for a name. Phuture was born as the most experimental space in the Zouk complex: hip hop, R&B, broken beats, and a musical policy that didn't fit on the main dance floor. The National Museum of Singapore preserves the sign from that year. It wasn't a touring brand or a borrowed party: it was a physical venue, tucked into the guts of the club, with LEDs, color, and an urban vocation that even then distinguished it from the house music of the main room.

Circular dance floor, curves, and the pop of Jahan Loh

Compared to the industrial nerve of the Mainroom, Phuture is designed to be compact and aerodynamic. Its hallmark is the circular dance floor, wrapped in bars with LED backlighting and a venue that today occupies two floors in The Cannery, at Clarke Quay. The entrance hallway and the walls feature works commissioned from Singaporean artist Jahan Loh, a street pop-art style that the club itself continues to champion after the latest renovation. The room functions as a playground for hip hop and urban music within Zouk: more enclosed, lower, designed for the body to move in an oval rather than a hangar.

From Jiak Kim Street to CQ @ Clarke Quay

On December 17, 2016, when Zouk closed a quarter-century on Jiak Kim Street, Phuture crossed the river with it to 3C River Valley Road. Velvet Underground didn't make the leap; this room did. At The Cannery, it was redesigned with a neo-industrial aesthetic and prepared to merge with the Mainroom via acoustic panels, a superclub trick that the 2026 renovation has taken further by also integrating Capital. The programming solidified around hip hop and R&B, without completely erasing the laboratory: there have been nights of hard dance, techno, and bass, from series like Soniq to dates with local electronic collectives.

SLIME, L-Acoustics, and the third life

On Saturdays, SLIME with DJ Rattle concentrates the city's hip hop on that floor. Wednesdays and Fridays complete the week, with an 18-year-old age threshold and closed-toe shoes required at the door. After the 2026 renovation closure, Phuture reopened on June 19 with an L-Acoustics system calibrated for a long, low floor: A15i Wide, KS21i subwoofers, and X12 fills, on a Milan-AVB network. It is no longer just the small room of the Zouk empire: it is a module of a venue that can open up for concerts, launches, and conferences. The pulse, however, remains that of an urban nightclub. Three nights. One circular dance floor. And an idea of the future that, thirty years later, still fits into one name.
