The Glove That Fits

The red light, the smoke, and a booth almost at floor level turn the Morning Lane basement into a venue that feels custom-made. The Glove That Fits does not chase the capacity of the East London warehouses: it chases proximity. The name works as a program: a club designed so that the audience fits, sweats, and sees what is spinning on the decks.

A basement of eighty bodies

In 2018, it opened as a 120-person venue on two floors, with a bar and café upstairs and an 80-person room downstairs, equipped with a custom d&b audiotechnik system. The low ceiling, volume, and minimal distance to the booth define the night. The then-operations manager, Dyllan Zain, formulated it at the birth of the project: they don't believe bigger is better. The connection between artist, audience, and room is the program, not an extra.

From Shapes to an artist calendar

The venue came out of the Shapes team, in Hackney Wick, and is supported by founder Seb Glover. The first night, March 9, 2018, was co-sponsored by Dimensions Festival with Kerem Akdag. Since then, the basement has mixed club, live, spoken word, and radio: house, techno, garage, jungle, disco, and rarities that a larger dance floor would dilute. Selectors like Terry Francis or Wordcolour, parties like Anal House Meltdown, and a regular Hackney community have turned the space into a physical continent, not a touring brand.

Gloves Off, the patio under the tracks

In May 2023, they opened Gloves Off, the adjoining patio, with a Funktion-One system, free entry, and food pop-ups. Ambient, downtempo, and day parties extend the basement toward the street, a step away from Homerton. The venue is split into two temperatures: the red of the underground and the air of the patio.

More hours for a small room

In February 2026, the Hackney Council granted a permanent license until 4:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays and until 2:00 AM on Thursdays. It coincided with the first major renovation since 2018: rebuilt booth, new layout, updated DJ equipment, new lighting, and more d&b tuning. The characteristic red light of the basement was preserved. The gesture remains the same: hold the dance floor without diluting it.
