Few figures synthesize the living memory of Chicago house like Michael Serafini: selector, owner of Gramaphone Records, and resident of Queen! at smartbar. His history is tied to a city where the record store, the DJ booth, and the dancefloor have functioned as a single ecosystem. Raised in the Bridgeport neighborhood and trained as a listener in the effervescence of Chicago's South Side, he grew up surrounded by dance music, Hot Mix 5 sessions, and the magnetism of Ron Hardy, an informal education that ended up defining his way of understanding the club.

From video mixing to the pulse of smartbar

Before establishing himself behind the decks, Serafini entered the Chicago nightlife scene during the eighties at the club Berlin, working as a video jockey and remixer. In the early nineties, he began DJing regularly, with the close encouragement of figures like Teri Bristol and Ralphi Rosario, and soon joined Gramaphone, an essential institution for generations of local and visiting DJs. There, he crossed paths with decisive names like Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, and Ralphi Rosario, while developing a purchasing and selection criterion closely tied to vinyl, discovery, and the real circulation of music on the dancefloor.

Queen!, community, and house without shortcuts

His reputation grew with residencies like Boom Boom Room, one of the city's historic nights, and was definitively consolidated when he took ownership of Gramaphone Records in 2007, a store open since 1969 that had become a reference point for house, techno, disco, and other electronic languages since the eighties. From that position, he also promoted the continuity of the Gramaphone label, oriented toward new Chicago voices, and has signed production or co-production works alongside Garrett David and Ralphi Rosario.

In the booth, his language moves between house, deep house, disco, luminous vocals, and grooves with jazz and soul memory; he does not seek the obvious hit, but rather the precise mix, the long journey, and the connection with the city's queer and underground tradition. As a resident of Queen! at smartbar, alongside Derrick Carter, Garrett David, and other allies of the scene, Serafini has maintained a weekly platform where history, LGBTQIA+ community, and new generations coexist. Sessions for Boiler Room, RA Exchange, Crack Magazine, or Red Bull Music have expanded his reach outside of Chicago, but his weight continues to reside in an authority that is less spectacular and more profound: that of someone who has sustained for decades the circuit that unites store, club, label, and dancefloor.
