Few producers have turned the intersection of disco, Chicago house, and hip hop breakbeats into a signature as immediate as Todd Terry. Trained as a DJ at Brooklyn block parties in the early eighties, he went through hip hop, disco, Latin music, and even rock before turning to the emerging house scene. His way of cutting vocals, basslines, and drums with the sampler gave the New York sound a raw, fast, and street-level punch that became a central influence on British acid house and rave culture.

1988, the year Europe responded

His international takeoff arrived in 1988. Under identities such as Black Riot, Royal House, and The Todd Terry Project, he signed tracks that today are part of the genre's foundational vocabulary: A Day in the Life, Can You Party, and Weekend. Can You Party reached number 14 in the UK, while his work on I'll House You for Jungle Brothers helped popularize hip house outside its initial hubs. The balance between recognizable loops, hard-hitting percussion, and a DJ logic designed for immediate impact turned his records into essential tools for European dancefloors.

From the club circuit to pop without losing the pulse

In the nineties, he expanded that language to a wider audience without abandoning the dancefloor. His remix of Missing by Everything But The Girl, re-released in 1995, was his biggest crossover success and set a model capable of transforming a pop song without erasing its emotion. Then came the vocal anthems Keep on Jumpin' and Something Goin' On, recorded with Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, both hits on the US dance charts and the UK Top 10. The album Ready for a New Day brought together that vocal house era, while Resolutions explored a darker turn toward drum and bass in 1999. His remix catalog also includes work for Björk, Annie Lennox, Garbage, Jamiroquai, and Michael Jackson.

Own labels, open booth, and continuity

Terry made independence part of his method. He launched InHouse Records in 1999, created SoundDesign Records the following year, and reactivated Freeze Records in 2013, articulating a catalog that links reissues, remixes, and contemporary production. Grammy-nominated and still active as a DJ, producer, remixer, and label head, he maintains a constant pace of releases and tours. In 2025, he debuted his first official Ibiza residency at Eden, Todd Terry presents Freeze Project, and recorded recent sessions at Hï Ibiza and Defected Malta. In 2026, he continued releasing new references on InHouse and Freeze, confirming a unique position: a historical pioneer who continues to work from the dancefloor, not from nostalgia.
