The organ that survived forty years of silence

When the surveyors climbed above the ground floor, the chapel was still there: cast-iron stained glass, horseshoe gallery, plasterwork, and a pipe organ that still works. Designed in 1910 by William James Morley in Burmantofts terracotta, with Gothic and Baroque features, the Peter Street Wesleyan hall had closed in July 1969. Today's Albert Hall was born from that discovery: returning a Grade II listed building that had been hidden for over four decades to music, rather than inventing a new nightclub from scratch.

From Methodist mission to independent venue

The Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Mission commissioned it to attract those who didn't set foot in a church: worship, classrooms, and popular concerts —in 1917 the People's Concert cost two pennies. During the Blitz, it provided temporary shelter for the Hallé orchestra when the Free Trade Hall was bombed; Winston Churchill even spoke from the lectern. The basement changed its use; the main floor did not. In 2012, the Trof group, now Mission Mars, bought the property. It reopened in 2013 with the Manchester International Festival: Mogwai premiered the Zidane soundtrack live, Alison Goldfrapp with strings from the Royal Northern College of Music, and Maxine Peake reciting Shelley. The formal reopening was on February 6, 2014 with Anna Calvi.

Gigs, clubbing, and the acoustics of a chapel

The venue —floor and balcony— programs concerts and club nights. Pixies, PJ Harvey, Placebo, Little Simz, Kesha, Tame Impala, SBTRKT, or Moderat have all performed here. Glitterbox, Warehouse Project, Homobloc, and, on New Year's Eve 2013, Frankie Knuckles with FAC51 The Haçienda, the first dance event in the restored chapel, have all landed on the dance floor. The d&b audiotechnik PA covers the floor and gallery. The public voted it the best concert venue at the 2014 and 2015 CityLife Awards. In 2023, it celebrated ten years with Róisín Murphy, Osees, Peter Hook & The Light, and the return of Mogwai.

Peter Street, two floors and continuous restoration

It remains at 27 Peter Street, with two floors and a stage under the organ. Standing capacity is 1900 for concerts and 2500 for club nights. A one-pound Restoration Levy on tickets funds maintenance —including the accessible lift to the balcony platform. There is a cloakroom in the basement and a smoking area; there is no on-site parking. The programming is variable: concerts, club, comedy, and private hire.
