Seven floors in Kabukicho

On October 28, 1995, hearing Jeff Mills in Tokyo meant walking up to the seventh floor of a building in Kabukicho. That venue saw the birth of Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo, a mix released in 1996 as part of Sony's Mix-Up series, which became a canonical reference for Detroit techno in Japan. LIQUIDROOM had opened in July 1994: a venue capable of operating on a continuous night schedule, with a narrow staircase that the public eventually mythologized, where the same stage served for concerts, club parties, hip hop, comedy, and wrestling. Laurent Garnier and DJ Shadow were part of that orbit. On January 2, 2004, the Shinjuku chapter closed with THE LAST DANCE〜SHINJUKU 94-03; the site was eventually converted into Shinjuku FACE.

A low building next to Meiji-dori

On July 14, 2004, the name reappeared in Ebisu, in its own venue on Meiji Avenue, three minutes from the station. The opening featured UA and Shing02. The ground floor houses the standing room; upstairs are the LIQUID LOFT lounge, the KATA gallery —opened in 2012— and the Time Out Café & Diner, which took over from Tower Records' TOWER CAFE in 2009. Today, the venue presents itself as a Tokyo venue without genre constraints, from the fringe to the mainstream, with lockers on the second floor and no private parking. The loose-stroke isotype is the work of artist Tomoo Gokita.

The same house, another dance floor

The move did not extinguish the electronics. In Ebisu, nights like HOUSE OF LIQUID, with MOODMAN, and the anniversary BLACK OUT events continued, with Takkyu Ishino, TASAKA, and DJ NOBU occupying the room, loft, and gallery. The venue cites Aphex Twin, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, or Frankie Knuckles among those who have DJed or performed. In 2012, it installed a CODA AUDIO system, the first in a Japanese live house, with a central subwoofer. In 2026, the 22nd anniversary of the Ebisu era features Francois K. and Optimo: the venue that was born for live performances continues to open at night when the calendar calls for it.
