The name that came from a Miami dive

In 2008, in the middle of the Winter Music Conference, David "Dao" Grier got stuck in a dilapidated spot in Miami called Pawnshop: broken airplane seats, half a bus inside, and a sign that didn't promise anything. Fifteen years later, in Dublin, one of his own dropped the same name and it fit. The green neon PAWN SHOP hangs today over a Dame Street alley, between graffiti and queues, as if the place had always been there.

It's not a costume. Grier, with years at Pygmalion, Berlin's Kleine Reise, and Tengu, wanted brick, sweat, and sound: a place that is raw, dangerous, and safe at the same time. The venue wasn't born from an investment fund; they sanded, painted, and wired it themselves.

Fourteen months to open the door

the building had been the Berlin Bar, closed after the illegal 2020 brunch that ended up in court. Grier left it written without ambiguity: it wasn't Berlin reopening, it was his first business of his own. The keys arrived in October 2021; the paperwork, sound restrictions, and construction ate up fourteen months. On February 17, 2023, with a new pub, restaurant, and live music license, Pawn Shop turned on the lights at number 15.

Upstairs remained a cocktail bar with a dance floor. Downstairs, the techno bunker, compact and intentionally dirty. On both floors, the system is Funktion-One: the one at the top bar, the one DJs cite when the electro pushes; the one in the basement, the one that turns the bunker into a resonance box.

The city that closes early

In a Dublin that has had its dance floors stripped away, Pawn Shop has become an operational rarity: two floors almost every day, from punk to disco, house, techno, and hip-hop, and free entry as the norm. The venue has managed to stay open until 03:00 six nights a week and until 01:30 on Sundays, an exception in a city of early closings. Upstairs usually hosts house and disco; downstairs, techno and electro until the floor vibrates.

The programming looks to home. Local collectives take over both floors; After Eight uses the basement early on for those who want a rave without the early morning; and every now and then recent history walks through the door. Dave Clarke played here for free in 2025, improvising, between the Cash 4 Gold neon and the booth. Grier sums it up without VIP ropes: bridges between generations, local DJs with a space, and a basement that wants to remain honest in 2030.
