A reclaimed teak oval overlooking Petitenget

Thousands of antique shutters run along the curve that Andra Matin built in 2010 facing the Indian Ocean. The gesture recalls the Colosseum, but it is not a set: 6,600 teak windows and shutters, gathered from across the Indonesian archipelago, cover the elliptical facade of the Potato Head Beach Club and hide the interior until the entrance opens to the horizon. Every floor faces the sea. It was promoted by businessman Ronald Akili and his partner Jason Gunawan, who a year earlier had opened Potato Head in Jakarta as a restaurant-bar and sought in Bali the leap of an Indonesian leisure brand into the international circuit.

The programming is born from the sunset

The venue does not wait for night to function as a club. From mid-morning until closing, a daily DJ plays balearic, disco, and house to the rhythm of the light. The musical policy—residents with a Balearic ear and heavy-hitting guests—placed it among the benchmark beach clubs in Asia. On the decks by the ocean, DJ Harvey, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, Midland, Palms Trax, Jayda G, Young Marco, Justin Vandervolgen, or Virgil Abloh have played. In 2017, Boiler Room recorded José Padilla providing the soundtrack to the sunset from this very venue. For years, Pete Herbert directed the music and fine-tuned the pool and sunset sound that still defines the house. Residents like Dita and Gero maintain that crossover of proto-house, Balearic disco, and slow-track readings.

Sun Down Circle, the ritual of over a decade

Since 2014, Sun Down Circle concentrates in a single day what the club rehearses every afternoon: listening together to how the Indian Ocean fades. The event has brought live acts like Roy Ayers, Kamasi Washington, Larry Heard, or Azymuth, and in the booth Ben UFO, Harvey, and Peggy Gou. It is not a touring festival: it is the ceremony of this building, with the lawn, the infinity pools, and the teak rotunda as a sounding board facing Seminyak.

The beach club as the heart of a village

Around the original venue grew Desa Potato Head: hotels, restaurants, and a different nightclub, Klymax, conceived with Harvey. The beach club remains the open-air cultural heart: two infinity pools, sun loungers on a lawn of about 500 m², a swim-up bar, and, since 2024, a 1 SOUND system distributed across the dance floor, dining area, garden, and shoreline. In September 2026, Dekmantel lands here for its Bali debut. It remains open every day, from ten in the morning until midnight—until two on Fridays and Saturdays—with casual dress and a dance floor that is still written looking west.
