Concrete, sphere and harbor

Jørn Utzon's sails were not born as a postcard: they are a geometry of precast concrete, cut from a sphere and anchored at Bennelong Point —Tubowgule, Gadigal land— between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove. The venue opened on October 20, 1973, with Elizabeth II at the inauguration, after Utzon abandoned the project in 1966 and Peter Hall finished the interiors. More than a million Höganäs tiles, white and cream, cover the shells. In 2007, UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage site. The useful fact for those coming to listen to music is another: under those sails there is an organism of halls, not a single auditorium.

Concert Hall, Studio and Forecourt

The Concert Hall, with up to 2,679 seats, is the big box: home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and, after the 2022 reopening, also to amplified concerts with a d&b audiotechnik KSL system (L/C/R arrays, SL-Subs and ArrayProcessing). Alongside it coexist the Joan Sutherland Theatre —Opera Theatre until 2012—, the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse, the Utzon Room and the Studio, flexible for up to 600 standing people. Outside, the Forecourt admits up to 6,000 standing at the foot of the Monumental Steps. Resident companies like Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Bangarra and Sydney Theatre Company share the building with contemporary music. The venue is visited daily; performances extend the night.

When the Studio lights up

In 2009, Brian Eno curated Luminous, the musical program that opened Vivid at the Opera House. That framework, today Vivid LIVE, turns the venue into a contemporary music festival every Australian winter. The Studio, the rest of the year cabaret and talks, is then set up as a club: subs, smoke, DJ booth and dance floors for Mad Racket, Future Classic or DUNJ. There, in 2012, Future Classic presented Flume with Isolée and Jacques Renault; later, Cashmere Cat, DJ Harvey or Omar-S performed. In 2024, Underworld filled the Concert Hall and the venue itself published the concert film. It is not a permanent nightclub: it is an arts center that, repeatedly, lends its architecture to club culture.

Heritage with an open box office

The Sydney Opera House remains a working venue: box office, foyers with harbor views, Bennelong restaurant, bars on the Lower Concourse, shop, underground parking and accessible access. More than 10,000 people tour the venue every day. The electronic programming does not erase the opera or the orchestra; they share the same concrete.
