Beginnings and Origins

Richard David James, known worldwide under his alias Aphex Twin, was born on August 18, 1971, in Limerick, Ireland, although he spent his childhood and adolescence in the county of Cornwall, England. From a very young age, he demonstrated an innate fascination with sound and electronics, dedicating himself to modifying and dismantling analog synthesizers and computers to create unexplored acoustic textures. In the late 1980s, he began performing as a deejay at local raves and free parties on the beaches of southwest England, forging an unmistakable experimental style and cementing his status as a cult figure in the burgeoning British electronic scene.

Rephlex Records and the Rise to Success

In 1991, together with Grant Wilson-Claridge, he co-founded the label Rephlex Records with the ambition of promoting 'braindance', a sound that combined the physical energy of dance music with maximum intellectual complexity. That same year, he released his first EP, 'Analogue Bubblebath', under the pseudonym AFX. The global turning point came in 1992 with the release of his acclaimed debut album, 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92', published by Apollo Records. Acclaimed by international critics, this record is considered a timeless masterpiece and an absolute pillar of Ambient Techno and IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Its overwhelming massive success allowed him to sign with the legendary British label Warp Records, marking the beginning of a golden era for electronic music.

Sonic Innovation and Disturbing Aesthetics

In the mid-nineties, Aphex Twin radically expanded his sonic boundaries with masterful releases such as 'Selected Ambient Works Volume II' (1994). Works like '...I Care Because You Do' (1995) and the extraordinary 'Richard D. James Album' (1996) surprised by fusing beautiful melodies with abrasive Drill and Bass rhythms. In addition to his undeniable musical genius, he achieved worldwide fame in pop culture thanks to the striking aesthetics of his works. Collaborating with visionary director Chris Cunningham, he released historic music videos for 'Come to Daddy' (1997) and 'Windowlicker' (1999). Both videos, which showed James's macabre smiling face implanted on other bodies, became cultural icons broadcast on MTV. In 2001, he released the double album 'Drukqs', combining electronic fury and emotional piano pieces like 'Avril 14th'.

Retirement, Return, and Contemporary Legend

After 'Drukqs', Aphex Twin stepped away from the media spotlight. For over a decade, he released music almost in secret under aliases like The Tuss or through the acclaimed 'Analord' vinyl series. He broke his silence spectacularly in 2014, when he returned by announcing his acclaimed album 'Syro' via a blimp over London, which earned him the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Subsequently, he would publish notable works such as the EP 'Collapse' (2018) and 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f' (2023). In parallel, he has delighted his die-hard fans by sharing hundreds of rarities from his vault under SoundCloud accounts like user18081971. Currently, his rare and massive live appearances at macro-festivals, accompanied by the epileptic visuals of his regular collaborator Weirdcore, are revered events that paralyze the industry, reaffirming him indisputably as one of the most brilliant minds in the history of contemporary electronic music.
