The visual legacy of The Warehouse Project takes to the streets of Manchester

On July 16, 2026, the city of Manchester officially inaugurated a retrospective exhibition documenting the evolution of one of the most influential institutions in global electronic music. Titled '20 Years of The Warehouse Project', the free open-air exhibition has been installed on The Avenue, within the central Spinningfields district, where it will remain open to the public for eight weeks, until September 10. This cultural initiative takes clubbing subculture out of the darkness of the dance floor to expose it in broad daylight, offering an intimate look at the two decades of history of the British promoter.

The open-air gallery is composed of twenty visual works ranging from raw 35mm film and unfiltered digital photographs to intimate polaroids, original contact sheets, and previously unseen archival material. These pieces capture both the collective euphoria and the crowds illuminated by strobe lights at high BPMs, as well as the quiet moments backstage that are rarely seen by attendees. The photographic work on display belongs to eight visual artists who have documented the scene since its inception, including Sebastian Matthes, Shaun Peckham, Jody Hartley, and Anthony Mooney.

To commemorate this foundational milestone, the organization has deployed a series of multidisciplinary projects that transcend the traditional party format:

  • A free open-air photography exhibition in the heart of Spinningfields.
  • The short documentary film 'Twenty Years In Manchester', directed by Leigh Powis and filmed on Kodak Ektachrome film.
  • The launch of a new printed magazine dedicated to the artists, labels, and communities of the project.
  • A series of exclusive podcasts and the expansion of its partnership with Apple Music to preserve historic DJ mixes in Spatial Audio.

From Boddingtons Brewery to Depot Mayfield: Two decades of evolution

Founded in 2006 by promoters Sam Kandel and Richard McGinnis, The Warehouse Project was born as a radical series of club nights at the old Boddingtons Strangeways Brewery. Since then, the brand has redefined the concept of destination clubbing in the United Kingdom, transforming forgotten industrial spaces into true pilgrimage temples for electronic music lovers. Its nomadic journey took the parties to the iconic underground car park on Store Street, through Victoria Warehouse, until firmly establishing itself in its current and monumental headquarters: Depot Mayfield.

Reaching 20 years is a huge moment for us. The Warehouse Project has always been about progressing and pushing boundaries. Since that first event in 2006, we have always tried to keep things moving and respond to the evolution of the music and culture around us.

— Sam Kandel and Richard McGinnis, founders of The Warehouse Project

Throughout these twenty years, the WHP booths have hosted an unparalleled spectrum of talent, uniting the most purist underground sounds with the titans of the industry. Figures of the stature of Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Disclosure, Fred Again.., DJ Paulette, and The Blessed Madonna have forged memorable performances under its industrial ceilings. For the upcoming WHP26 season, which will kick off on September 18 of this year, the organization has already confirmed the presence of artists such as the Dutch KI/KI, Overmono, Interplanetary Criminal, Hannah Laing, Duke Dumont, and the long-awaited return of Tiësto to the city after a thirteen-year absence.

Cultural impact: When the dance floor becomes heritage

The celebration of these two decades consolidates The Warehouse Project as an internationally recognized cultural institution. What began as a seasonal experiment has matured into a fundamental pillar for Manchester's nightlife economy and music tourism. The deep exploration of its graphic identity through the years, highlighting the work of design studios such as Studio Moross, demonstrates that aesthetic and institutional care has been as important as the impeccable curation of its lineups.

By meticulously documenting the dancefloor ecosystem, from the complex lighting design and the vanguard of sound synthesis to the incessant groove that connects thousands of strangers every weekend, The Warehouse Project ensures that its legacy endures. This 2026 retrospective is not just a nostalgic look at the past, but a statement of intent: club culture is contemporary heritage and its history deserves to be displayed with pride in broad daylight.
