In the early hours of New York mornings, Danny Tenaglia turned the DJ booth into a ritual: marathons lasting up to twenty hours, flashlights, masks, and a microphone that greeted the dance floor as if every session were a tribal gathering. He earned the nickname The DJ's DJ when, during the Winter Music Conference in Miami, names like Carl Cox or Deep Dish occupied the dance floor at his party at Space, and the usual hierarchy of the craft dissolved.

From the Paradise Garage to the Tribal laboratory

He grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in an Italian neighborhood crossed by salsa, soul, and jukeboxes. By the age of ten, he was already collecting vinyl records by The Trammps, Marvin Gaye, Hugh Masekela, and Giorgio Moroder, almost always paying more attention to the B-side. In 1979, he discovered the Paradise Garage and Larry Levan: a club without pretenses and a mixed community that served as his model. At seventeen, he played at the Miami Lounge in Brooklyn. In 1985, he moved to Miami as a resident at Cheers, where he taught New York and Chicago house; five years later, he returned home, tired of only playing other people's music.

Back home, he signed remixes for Right Said Fred, Jamiroquai, and Madonna, and with The Daou, he brought forth Surrender Yourself (1993). The album Hard & Soul (1995, Tribal Records) gave a name to his cocktail of classic groove and club depth. The compilations Mix This Pussy and Can Your Pussy Do The Dog? brought his sets to those who wanted to dissect his mixing.

Elements, Twilo, and the bridge to Europe

In 1996, he landed on Saturdays at Twilo; in 1998, he moved to Tunnel and released Tourism, featuring Elements—number one on the Billboard dance chart for two weeks—and Music Is The Answer with Celeda, which entered the UK Top 40. He shifted toward more tribal and progressive grooves and became the hinge between that scene and British DJs. At Vinyl, he christened Be Yourself and recovered the spirit of the Garage: techno if he felt like it, Michael Jackson if necessary. Global Underground Athens (1999) and London (2000) exported that darkness. In 2001, he placed third in the DJ Mag Top 100; the following year came the Grammy nomination for his remix of Depeche Mode's I Feel Loved. Be Yourself closed Vinyl on April 25, 2004.

Space, Brooklyn, and the Global Underground trilogy

Later came the summer residency at Space Ibiza, the number one on the Billboard Club Charts with The Space Dance (2008), and the compilation Futurism. In 2019, he released Don't Turn Your Back on Hot Creations, with remixes by Carl Cox and Harry Romero. Nervous Records hosted The Brooklyn Gypsy (2022), Move That Body with Cevin Fisher (2023), and Tonight (2024). In November 2023, he closed his Global Underground trilogy with GU45: Brooklyn, a tribute to the night that ignited his career, and in 2024, he returned to play at Hï Ibiza as part of Future Rave. He remains the same DJ who, at the end of the session, goes down to the dance floor to dance with those who came to listen to him.
