Origins and Influences

Rolando Ray Rocha, known internationally as DJ Rolando, was born on November 15, 1970, in the city of Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in the Mexicantown district, a neighborhood with a strong Hispanic cultural presence, which deeply shaped his musical roots. From a very young age, he was immersed in Latin rhythms and percussion thanks to his father, a talented musician who inspired him to follow his own path in music. During his youth, he began making a name for himself in the local scene, but it was in the mid-eighties when he heard Jeff Mills under his alias The Wizard. This revelation drew him to the innovative sounds of Techno, changing the course of his career forever.

The Underground Resistance Era and the Jaguar Anthem

Through a mutual friend, Rolando met Mike Banks (Mad Mike), one of the pillars of the legendary musical collective Underground Resistance (UR). In 1994, Rolando officially joined UR, contributing his unique vision that fused classic Detroit Techno with an undeniable rhythmic warmth and Latin soul. In 1999, under the alias The Aztec Mystic, he released the EP Knights of the Jaguar, his undisputed masterpiece. This track not only became the most successful release in the history of Underground Resistance, but it also transcended the barriers of Techno. Its evocative melody and hard-hitting rhythms led it to be played by house, trance, and progressive DJs, establishing itself as a timeless anthem of global electronic music.

Evolution, Los Hermanos, and the R3 Label

During his time at Underground Resistance, he was also part of the acclaimed project Los Hermanos alongside Gerald Mitchell, releasing music that further explored his cultural heritage. However, at the end of 2004, after a decade of intense work and success with UR, Rolando decided it was time to forge his own path, leaving the collective and the Los Hermanos project in search of a new creative direction.

In the mid-2000s, he crossed the Atlantic to settle in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. From Europe, he continued to develop his career as an international DJ, performing at iconic clubs such as Berghain and Panorama Bar in Berlin, and releasing on respected labels like Ostgut Ton or Delsin. In 2014, Rolando took another fundamental step by founding his own record label, R3 (Roland Rocha Records), created to release music exclusively, without commercial compromises and with total control over his sound, demonstrating his relevance as a key figure in the evolution of contemporary electronic music.
