Origins

Jeffery Eugene Mills, born on June 18, 1963, in Detroit, Michigan, is universally acclaimed as one of the most visionary and defining figures in the history of electronic music. His immersion into the sonic universe began in the early 1980s, absorbing the rich musical heritage of his city, from Motown Soul to P-Funk.

However, his legend began to be forged under the alias «The Wizard». As a radio host and DJ at Detroit's WJLB station, Mills revolutionized the airwaves with his late-night sessions, where he showcased an almost superhuman turntablism technique, mixing hip-hop, electro, new wave, and the nascent sounds of industrial techno with dizzying speed and surgical precision that left his audience stunned.

In the late 80s, he co-founded the collective Underground Resistance (UR) alongside «Mad» Mike Banks. UR was not just a musical project, but a sociopolitical statement with a paramilitary and combative aesthetic. The duo injected a militancy and sonic rawness into techno, designed to empower the community in the face of Detroit's economic decline and challenge the commercialization of the industry, establishing a vital bridge between American futuristic funk and European industrial hardness.

Style

After leaving the UR collective in 1991 to pursue a more personal and abstract artistic vision, Mills founded his own record label, Axis Records, in 1992. This platform became the laboratory where he refined techno to its most minimalist, cyclical, and spatial essence, defining what we now know as «Minimal Techno».

His style is characterized by a science fiction atmosphere, evoking the coldness of outer space and the hypnotic repetition of machines. He is revered worldwide for his DJ technique, using three or four turntables simultaneously and incorporating the Roland TR-909 drum machine live, which he treats as a solo instrument to create dense polyrhythmic textures.

Timeless anthems like «The Bells» or the «Waveform Transmission» series encapsulate his ability to generate tension and euphoria with sparse but devastatingly effective elements, treating each production not as a simple dance track, but as an interstellar transmission.

Legacy

Jeff Mills' impact transcends the limits of club culture; he is primarily responsible for elevating techno to the category of contemporary art and high culture. He was a pioneer in the collaboration between electronic and classical music, highlighting his work «Blue Potential» with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra.

Likewise, he has redefined the relationship between film and music, composing new soundtracks for silent film masterpieces such as Fritz Lang's «Metropolis» and presenting them at prestigious institutions like the Centre Pompidou and the Louvre Museum.
