El Matachín

Seven inches at Marula Café

In the DJ booth at Marula Café, in Ciutat Vella, El Matachín has made the seven-inch record his language. As a resident DJ at the club, he selects funk, disco, hip hop, and Latin and African rhythms with a collector's ear and a dancefloor pulse. The 45 rpm format allows him to craft eclectic sessions, loaded with rhythm and twists, far from the monothematic night.

Colombian crate, Barcelona agenda

A Colombian based in Barcelona for over a decade—he himself draws the map between Bogotá and the Catalan capital—he joined the local scene through vinyl collectives. He was part of Makossa Grove Combo and Scratch Invaders, and later the duo The Hustle. On Mixcloud, between 2013 and 2020, he documented that ear with the Funky Feeling series: seventeen vinyl-only sessions, many entirely on 45s, covering soul, boogie, breaks, salsa, cumbia, and Afro-Caribbean sounds. Volume 13 is a Colombian session; number 9, an Afro-Caribbean portrait; number 3, an Afro-Colombian special.

Radio, label, and festival

In August 2020, he brought that same sensibility to C/C Radio HQ, in a program broadcast by Poblenou Community Radio. In 2022, Loop Digger Records commissioned him for the first edition of the Cachopo Sessions, an eclectic session of soul, funk, disco, and old school rap on seven inches. In July 2024, he played at the Vida Festival in Vilanova i la Geltrú, as part of the Vida Club programming.

From Poble-sec to São Paulo

Outside of Marula, he has been a guest of Dirty Wax Djs in 2018, has played hard salsa at the Todos Vuelven series at Salvadiscos, and opened the Poble-sec Fiesta Mayor at Koska Taverna with an Afro Disco Latin set. In 2026, he appeared as a guest of Planta Baixa at Ultramar Club and shared the booth at Marula with selectors such as Thisorder, Jim Sharp, or Rodríguez. That same year, he toured Brazil and Colombia alongside Iván Ivanovich, with dates in São Paulo, Medellín, and Bogotá—Starlane, Patuá Discos, Formosa Hi-Fi, A Balsa, Mala, or Templo Sound, among others—.

The selector of the record

Today, El Matachín moves between his Barcelona residency and an Atlantic agenda. His signature remains the suitcase of singles: black music, tropics, and groove, without rigid labels and with the 45 rpm as the unit of measurement.
