Rafael Carretero López, known worldwide in the electronic music scene under the stage name Karretero (and who in his early days also used aliases such as Ralph Montana and Dj Karretero), was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1982. His deep passion for music was awakened in his childhood. Between the ages of 8 and 13, he enrolled as a student at the prestigious Madrid Conservatory, where he received intense academic training learning to play the piano. This solid theoretical and harmonic instruction would lay unbeatable foundations for his future and successful facet as a music producer. It was at the end of the nineties when the burgeoning and vibrant Madrid club culture completely captured his attention, definitively shifting his interest toward synthetic rhythms and underground dance floors.

Takeoff in the Madrid Scene

The year 2000 marked the true starting point of his professional career behind the decks when he was recruited by the label and booking agency MushRoom Records. This golden opportunity threw open the doors of the demanding Spanish capital's circuit, allowing him to start DJing regularly under the alias Dj Karretero in legendary clubs and venues of the era such as Arena, Van Vas, and Soma. During this flourishing stage, he actively collaborated with pioneering local collectives such as The Park and Technoworks. The great leap toward his consolidation at a national level came in 2005, the year in which he secured the prestigious residency of the influential FSM Group and the historic Danzoo session at the mythical Macumba venue. From this unbeatable platform, and alternating performances with his alter ego Ralph Montana, he began to expand his dominance throughout Spanish geography, standing out especially in the Andalusia region.

Key Residencies and International Consolidation

Throughout his more than two decades of prolific trajectory, his impeccable, millimeter-precise mixing technique and his natural, innate ability to decipher the energy of the dance floor have positioned him as an absolutely indispensable artist. He has captained some of the most influential sessions in Spain, playing fundamental roles as a resident at the successful Reverse Club and the acclaimed NOX Club. His indisputable versatility and talent have led him to conquer highly demanding booths such as LAB theCLUB, The Bassement Club, Fabrik, or the iconic Amnesia Ibiza nightclub, actively participating in global parties of the magnitude of Music On. During all these memorable tours, he has had the immense privilege of sharing the stage with true international titans of the genre such as Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Luciano, Cristian Varela, and Nic Fanciulli.

Sound Identity, Production, and Macro-festivals

In his facet as a record producer, Karretero has perfected an unmistakable, extremely solid sound identity, characterized by enveloping basslines, danceable rhythm, and plenty of groove. He handles himself with absolute mastery and fluidity in genres such as Tech House, Techno, House, and Deep Tech. His robust productions and creative remixes have been released by world-class record labels such as Toolroom, Saved Records, elrow Music, Flashmob Records, Stereo Productions, Mood Child, Safe Music, and Too Many Rules. Recent massive hits like Feels Much Better and Magic Sax (both in collaboration with his compatriot Crusy), the overwhelming To My Beat, and tracks like Due Bongo, have guaranteed him a constant presence in the coveted sales charts of specialized portals such as Beatport and Traxsource. Represented internationally by the renowned Analog DJ Agency, Karretero is a regular guest on the lineups of European macro-festivals such as Time Warp Spain, Medusa Sunbeach Festival, Aquasella, and Weekend Beach Festival, confirming himself year after year as one of the greatest and most respected exponents of contemporary electronic music in Spain.
