Octave One

The Mothership as a live manifesto

In the international techno circuit, Octave One is recognized more for their hardware than for a DJ booth: an analog rig christened The Mothership, packed with synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines, with which the Burden brothers turn their live act into a crossover of funk, house, and almost symphonic lines. Hailing from Detroit, they are one of the most in-demand acts of the city's second generation and continue to tour with that live format.

From Transmat to 430 West

The group burst onto the scene in 1990 with I Believe, released on Transmat, Derrick May's label, and included in the compilation Techno 2: The Next Generation alongside Juan Atkins or Carl Craig. That same year, they founded 430 West Records with Lynell Burden to release The Octivation EP and build their own catalog. The label, born on West 8 Mile Road, became a platform for Aux 88, Terrence Parker, Eddie Fowlkes, and DJ Rolando's Jaguar, in addition to Octave One's own classics: The X Files, Foundation, Empower, and Nicolette.

A million Black Water

In 2000, they released Black Water, featuring the vocals of Ann Saunderson. The 2002 version, re-orchestrated in London with the Urban Soul Orchestra, was distributed on Concept Music, Ministry of Sound, and other labels; it surpassed one million copies and entered the UK Singles Chart (reaching positions 47 and 69). Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia, Jeff Mills, and Richie Hawtin have kept it on the dancefloor. Albums followed such as The Living Key (To Images from Above), The Collective, Summers on Jupiter, Burn It Down (2015), and Love by Machine (2016). With Tresor, they released the audiovisual Off The Grid in 2006 alongside their alias Random Noise Generation. They have remixed Massive Attack, Underground Resistance, Inner City, Orbital, Groove Armada, Claude VonStroke, Luke Slater, and Dave Clarke.

Strings in Zurich and Never On Sunday

In 2016, they shared the stage with members of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, conducted by Stephen Hussey. In 2023, back on 430 West, came the album Never On Sunday, featuring tracks like Tiers and The Bearer, ten shorts directed by the Burdens, and a shift toward breakbeats, vocals, and atmospheres. They remain active as Random Noise Generation (Endustry) and as Octave One: in 2026, they reissued The Collective [1989-1998] on deluxe vinyl and released a live version of Whatever She Wants recorded in Manchester. Sets at Boiler Room —Moscow, Valencia, and the Berlin festival— document what their live act already was in theory: Detroit techno made as a family, in plain sight and without a safety net.
