A printing press turned into a sound refuge

Between workshops, DLR tracks, and industrial warehouses, FOLD takes advantage of the isolation of Stephenson Street to function as a long-haul dance chamber. The project opened to the public in August 2018 in Gillian House, a former printing press in the Canning Town area, driven from the creative orbit of Shapes by Seb Glover and Lasha Jorjoliani, also known as Voicedrone. Its location outside a residential area was key to developing extended dawn programming and a 24-hour license, something unusual in contemporary London clubbing.

The dancefloor before the showcase

The interior design avoids the theatricality of a large hall and works with a functional aesthetic: dark walls, industrial structure, louvered windows, LED bars, and metal platforms for dancing. The booth is at floor level, so the attention shifts from the DJ to the community occupying the dancefloor. The Funktion-One system and the conditioning of the old building allow for a physical sound, tuned for the space, with a public reference to 110 dB and a bass response that goes down to 32 Hz. Lockers replace the traditional cloakroom, and the no-photo policy reinforces an experience centered on presence, privacy, and bodily freedom.

Sundays without a showcase and residents with their own weight

The musical identity is supported by techno, electro, EBM, rave, industrial, breaks, and more hypnotic or psychedelic lines, with a clear preference for long sessions and artists capable of sustaining narrative tension. Its UNFOLD Sunday has become one of the club's most recognizable appointments: unannounced lineups, door tickets, and a dancefloor culture where the proper name weighs less than the collective energy. Around the club, residents like James Newmarch, Anabel Arroyo, Andrømeda, Lockhart, Riva, Gareth Wild, and Alba Heidari have grown, in addition to visits and collaborations with figures and labels from the international underground electronic network.

Culture of presence in East London

FOLD functions as a club, art space, and recording platform, with programming that crosses sessions, live acts, talks, audiovisuals, and production uses during the week. The venue has consolidated a reputation as a safe space and queer-positive, with explicit rules against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism at its events. Its value within the London scene does not depend only on the schedule or the volume, but on a way of understanding club culture as social architecture: an industrial building, a recurring community, a door focused on protecting the dancefloor, and a layout designed to disappear into the sound.
