Mondays at Heaven, Ibiza suitcase

Spectrum, at Heaven, was billed as Theatre of Madness: more than fifteen hundred people on a Monday, and behind the decks was a Londoner who in 1987 had landed in Ibiza with Trevor Fung, Ian St Paul, Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling, and Johnnie Walker. At Amnesia they heard house, soul, and italo; back in London that mix—the seed of the Balearic sound and British acid house—first failed and then ignited the scene. In 1988 he founded Perfecto Records, the label that remains his home.

Cream, Tranceport and the DJ Mag throne

With Steve Osborne he produced Happy Mondays' Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, a number one in the UK and Brit Award for best producer in 1991. The Perfecto remix of U2's Even Better Than the Real Thing outperformed the original on the charts and landed him as an opening act on the Zoo TV tour. Between 1997 and 1999 he was a resident at Cream in Liverpool; Tranceport (1998) and Resident. Two Years of Oakenfold at Cream turned that superclub trance into a cult object. DJ Mag voted him number one in the world in 1998 and 1999. That same year, 1999, he was the first DJ on the main stage at Glastonbury, in front of some ninety thousand attendees, and a resident DJ at the opening of the London superclub Home.

A million Bunkka and the Hollywood track

Bunkka (2002) was his first studio album under his own name: more than a million copies and tracks like Starry Eyed Surprise, Southern Sun, and Ready Steady Go, featuring Shifty Shellshock, Carla Werner, Ice Cube, Nelly Furtado, Tricky, or Perry Farrell. The list of remixes exceeds one hundred—Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Massive Attack, The Cure, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson—and the film industry asked him for electronic pulse for Swordfish, The Matrix Reloaded, or the James Bond film Die Another Day. He played at the Hollywood Bowl, on the Great Wall of China, and opened for Madonna and U2. Three Grammy nominations (the Creamfields compilation, A Lively Mind, and his work with Madonna) seal that crossover between club and pop.

From Everest to Mission Underground

In 2017 he played at the Everest base camp; in 2018 he was the first artist to perform officially at Stonehenge. The radio show Planet Perfecto, the Perfecto label, and albums like Shine On (2022) and Mission Underground (2026) keep the catalog moving, with a North American tour announced for October and November 2026. Trance, house, and that memory of Ibiza are not a vintage costume: they are the language with which he continues to fill festivals, from Creamfields to EDC, nearly four decades after that Monday at Heaven.
