Biography of Love Parade
The Origin: A Demonstration for Peace and Music
The Love Parade represents one of the most iconic, legendary, and ultimately tragic chapters in the entire history of global electronic music. This mass movement was born in the summer of 1989 in the city of West Berlin, a few months before the historic fall of the Berlin Wall. It was originally conceived in a humble manner by DJ Matthias Roeingh, known worldwide as Dr. Motte, together with artist Danielle de Picciotto. Its primary idea was not to build a commercial festival, but to articulate a political demonstration registered under the curious motto 'Peace, Joy, and Pancakes'. Its fundamental goal was to promote global disarmament, international understanding, and love without borders through the revolutionary and unifying force of Techno music. That modest first edition gathered barely 150 people dancing behind a van equipped with a modest sound system on the central Kurfürstendamm avenue.
The Golden Age and the Global Explosion in Berlin
Throughout the effervescent nineties, the Love Parade experienced meteoric and unparalleled growth, consolidating itself as the main global epicenter of the new club culture and the rave movement. After the German reunification, the massive event quickly transformed into the ultimate symbol of youth freedom and fraternity in Europe. To accommodate the gigantic crowds, in 1996 the mammoth parade of floats moved to the immense Tiergarten park. There, the human tide concentrated along the Straße des 17. Juni, culminating their dances around the majestic Victory Column (Siegessäule). It was precisely in this brilliant stage that the festival reached its absolute zenith, managing to gather in the unrepeatable 1999 edition an astonishing estimated figure of 1.5 million attendees from all parts of planet Earth.
The Change of Course and the Tragic End in Duisburg
Despite its immense sociological success, the festival began to face serious and complex financial challenges and logistical problems at the beginning of the new millennium. After several years filled with institutional uncertainty, the brand was finally acquired by businessman Rainer Schaller and his company Lopavent GmbH. Under this new commercial management, the electronic caravan definitively abandoned its cradle in Berlin, moving the venue to different cities in the Ruhr region starting in 2007. Unfortunately, the brilliant history of this movement reached a dark and heartbreaking end during the edition held in Duisburg in the month of July 2010. A catastrophic human stampede caused by a fatal bottleneck in the only access tunnel to the venue tragically claimed the lives of 21 attendees, leaving hundreds injured. Following this terrible event, the organization announced the irrevocable and definitive cancellation of the Love Parade.
