Chimneys over the meadow

The chimneys of the Pickman factory remain fixed in the sky of the Isla de la Cartuja. Before the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo filled this site with works and concerts, the Monasterio de Santa María de las Cuevas —founded around 1400 by Archbishop Gonzalo de Mena— was a cloister, a barracks during the Napoleonic occupation, and, from 1841 to 1982, the Charles Pickman earthenware factory. Restored for Expo 92 as the Royal Pavilion, the monastery became the headquarters of the CAAC in 1997, an institution created in February 1990 and opened to the public on January 1, 1998. Between 1509 and 1537, the remains of Christopher Columbus rested in the Santa Ana chapel.

A museum that lets itself be occupied by the dance floor

It is not a nightclub: it is a museum-monument of about 20,000 m² that, since 2005, has programmed open-air music. Eleven editions of the Nocturama cycle gave way in 2016 to Pop CAAC, a tribute to Jesús Ordovás' Diario Pop. The monastery's meadow is the venue for those nights: independent pop, rock, and, increasingly, electronic music. The Interestelar Sevilla festival has established its Seville edition here. In 2024, Pop CAAC opened the closing to Electrolunch with Todd Terje and DJ Hell. In October 2025, the Electrolunch NXT Festival occupied the CAAC with electronics, audiovisuals, and workshops, featuring names like Nina Kraviz. In September 2026, Pop CAAC and Rebels brought Jamie Jones for a tech house session from 19:00 to 02:30.

The venue, by day and by dawn

Whoever enters through Avenida Américo Vespucio, 2 walks towards the baroque door between ponds. Inside, the gothic church, the mudéjar cloister, chapels, and orchards dialogue with contemporary installations. Visiting hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 21:00 and Sunday and holidays from 10:00 to 15:30; it remains closed on Mondays. Concerts have variable programming and extend beyond the museum closing time. There is a cafeteria, a specialized library, and nearby parking at the Bolsa de La Cartuja and Torre Sevilla. The CAAC does not operate with a permanent club sound system: each cycle sets up its production on the meadow, in the shadow of a monastery that has gone from a charterhouse to contemporary art and, at night, to the dance floor.
