A pier that acts like a festival

There is no typical nightclub door: there is a pier over one kilometer long driven into Lake Michigan. At Navy Pier, electronic music arrives in waves. In summer, Wave Wall Wax places Chicago house and dance DJs on the Ferrara Candy Wave Wall Stage, free and right by the water. At the end of the pier, the Festival Hall —about 15,800 m² and 12,500 standing capacity— is set up as a large-format venue. Skrillex, FISHER, Fred again.. and Louis The Child have turned that hall into a dance floor. The place is not a club with fixed hours; it is a public pier where the dance floor is installed over the lake.

From the Burnham Plan to the People's Pier

It opened on July 15, 1916 as Municipal Pier, the pier dreamed of in Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago, with a design by Charles Sumner Frost: cargo, passengers, and leisure all at once. In 1927 it was renamed Navy Pier in honor of the sailors of the First World War. In the Second World War, it was a naval training center. After decades of irregular use, on July 12, 1995 it reopened as a mixed-use destination for culture, commerce, and entertainment. The Aon Grand Ballroom, with a 24-meter dome and lake views, belongs to that 1916 factory and still stands as a concert hall.

Halls, dome, and lawn

Music does not fit into a single box. The Festival Hall is split into two halls or used in its entirety, with ceilings up to 18 meters and eight loading docks. The Ballroom adds a fixed stage, 3,000 lights in the dome, and a permanent JBL VTX V20 system. In Polk Bros Park, Lake Stage and City Stage share another JBL VTX system —line array, VTX G28 subwoofers, and Soundcraft Vi3000 consoles— designed for free concerts without overwhelming the neighborhood. The East End Plaza opens the pier to open-air dance. The 2016 centenary left the Centennial Wheel, the park, and a reinterpretation of the promenade; later came the Sable hotel, with 223 rooms, and the marina.

Skyline Sessions fills Thursdays and Fridays with live music next to the wave wall. On Saturdays, local house takes over the same stage. Big names in electronic music enter through Festival Hall or the East Plaza, with standing room, and for concerts at the Event Center, an 18+ rule. The pier opens every day from 11:00 and closes according to the season, not in the early morning: clubbing here is an event, not a permanent session. Nearly nine million visits a year remind us that this remains a public space. The CTA drops off lines 29, 65, 66, and 124 at the Navy Pier Terminal itself, a step away from the west gate; to get to the dance floor, you have to cross the pier.
