The birth of Belong in the music ecosystem

The music industry and the technology sector have witnessed this week the official launch of Belong, a new New York-based startup that promises to transform monetization and the direct relationship between artists and their most ardent followers. Founded by Nick Holmstén, former global head of music at Spotify, and Ash Pournouri, renowned promoter and former manager of the legendary producer Avicii, the platform emerges after a period of confidential development to establish an unprecedented financial bridge in the entertainment ecosystem.

Pournouri, who was a fundamental piece in the global rise of Avicii and the explosion of electronic music at the beginning of the last decade, brings his vast experience in talent management and the promotion of massive events. For his part, Holmstén, after leading Spotify's content strategy and founding Tunigo, provides the technological muscle necessary to operate at the intersection of financial technology (fintech) and music culture.

KYC technology and the "Know Your Fan" protocol

Unlike traditional metrics based on follower counts or superficial interaction on social media, Belong bases its network architecture on strict identity verification. The platform operates under KYC (Know Your Customer) banking protocols, ensuring that every registered member is a real, verified person. Based on this bank-grade validation, the system builds what they have called a KYF (Know Your Fan) graph.

This KYF graph amalgamates user interaction data from streaming platforms, social media activity, and ticket and merchandise purchase history. The core of the user experience resides in a digital passport (Passport). This virtual card, hosted directly in the fan's mobile device wallet, immutably records the level of support and loyalty toward a specific artist or record label over time.

This continuous record of activity translates into tangible benefits for the user, such as priority access to ticket presales at face value, exclusive releases of recorded material, and immersive experiences reserved only for the most dedicated members. Simultaneously, the financial value generated by this spending is redirected directly and transparently to the artist.

Fans have been showing their devotion for decades; the industry just never kept the receipt. A sold-out venue empties, a number changes, and all that love has nowhere to land. We built the rails that transport it.

Capital injection and backing from industry titans

The viability and disruptive potential of Belong have immediately attracted the attention of major venture capital firms and influential figures in the sector. Among the lead investors who have backed the project in its initial phase are the accelerator a16z speedrun, Blitzscaling Ventures, Prevail Capital, and Backwards Capital.

In addition to financial backing, the board of directors and the advisory panel feature heavyweights from the tech and music industries. Notable is the participation of Hans Vestberg, former CEO of telecommunications giants like Verizon and Ericsson, who assumes the role of chairman of the board. Joining him are executives such as Troy Carter, former manager of Lady Gaga and a key figure in the early years of Spotify, and Chris Zarou, founder of Visionary Music Group.

Fans fund this entire industry, but it barely knows their names. Music sells everything around it, from tickets to the culture itself, and yet, artists capture only a fraction of the value they create. We built Belong to fix this.

A new monetization paradigm for the electronic scene

The convergence between fintech infrastructure and the superfan economy poses a highly promising scenario for record labels, promoters, and independent artists. Recent industry reports estimate that the superfan market represents a multi-billion dollar opportunity that current streaming models, based on algorithms and passive playlists, fail to capitalize on efficiently. Belong seeks to correct this structural asymmetry.

In a clubbing and electronic music landscape where the groove, sound synthesis, and unwavering loyalty to underground labels are vital components of the ecosystem, tools of this caliber could completely redefine the rules of the game. By channeling spending directly to creators and eliminating inefficient intermediaries, this technology has the potential to transform how international tours are financed, how limited-edition vinyl is distributed, and how the line-ups of future festivals are structured, finally granting economic power to those who sustain the dance floor.
