Earlier this August, software developer Orph Audio introduced Monochord to the market, a new harmonic workstation, multisampler, and texture generator designed for music production environments. This virtual instrument, compatible with macOS and Windows operating systems, is designed to streamline chord-based workflows, eliminating the need to chain multiple plugins or possess advanced music theory knowledge. The tool is presented as an alternative to artificial intelligence-generated options, opting for a purely manual and analog approach to sound design.
Sound architecture and sample library
The core of Monochord is based on an extensive 11.8 GB library that must be downloaded after installation. This database contains 425 sampled sounds that come directly from analog synthesizers, digital synthesizers, and iconic studio equipment manufactured between the 1980s and 2000s. Instead of relying on generative algorithms, Orph Audio has integrated more than 600 chord voicings that have been manually positioned and tuned, ranging from basic triads to complex nine-note piano chords.
The control of these progressions is managed through a position parameter that oscillates between values of -12 and +16. By increasing this value, the system is not limited to inverting the existing chord, but transitions to higher, independent harmonic sets. Conversely, negative values gradually darken the timbre until only the root note remains. Additionally, the stereo and spatial amplitude of the chord (Spread) can be adjusted in three distinct stages: closed position, open position, and orchestral arrangement.
Sequencing, modulation, and absence of static presets
Operationally, Monochord rejects the inclusion of traditional default presets. Instead, the software implements a mode called "Factory." With a single click, this system designs a completely new sound by combining instruments, effects, space, and movement under strictly musical rules. Each generated result functions as a unique starting point for the producer, ensuring that no interaction sounds the same as the previous one.

This feature transforms Monochord into a harmonic command center, allowing producers to use Orph Audio's complex chord arrangements with their own synthesizers.
Additionally, the software supports audio and MIDI export via a drag-and-drop system. Users also have the ability to import their own audio samples and MIDI configurations, which exponentially expands custom sound design capabilities.

The arrival of Monochord underscores a growing trend in music technology: the search for creative immediacy without sacrificing the sound quality of classic hardware. By requiring an internet connection only for its initial activation, the software allows for offline use for a period of 14 days, adapting to the needs of producers on the move or in isolated studios.
The plugin is currently available in VST3, AU formats, and as a standalone application. According to official information provided by the developer, an AAX format version for Pro Tools users is currently in development. Its launch price has been set at 139 euros, also offering a rent-to-own option distributed over twelve monthly payments.
