Tilla Tec confirms its permanent closure in Amsterdam

The end of an era in Amsterdam West

Tilla Tec, the underground bastion that revitalized the iconic premises at Doctor Jan van Breemenstraat 1, has confirmed that it will close its doors permanently at the end of its current season. Through its official portal, the organization has announced preparations for its Grand Finale Closing Weekender, marking the month of November 2026 as the final point of its journey. This news comes as a heavy blow to the local clubbing scene, which loses one of its most dynamic, inclusive, and culturally relevant spaces of recent years.

Since its inauguration on April 12, 2024, the club took on the monumental challenge of occupying the facilities that previously housed the legendary institution De School. However, far from trying to replicate or live in the shadow of its predecessor, the project managed to forge a completely new identity. Built inside an old technical school dating back to 1967, the building retained its raw charm and industrial energy. With an approximate capacity for nine hundred attendees and the backing of a coveted twenty-four-hour license, the venue quickly transformed into a multidisciplinary refuge that integrated dark dance floors, art exhibition areas, a rotating restaurant, and spaces for community gathering.

An ephemeral but transcendental project

The conception of Tilla Tec was always marked by a temporary nature. Initially, the provisional lease agreement was stipulated to end in the spring of 2025, but the undeniable success of the space and its roots in the city allowed for its lifespan to be extended until the end of 2026. Behind this ambitious initiative were key figures from the Dutch nightlife scene, such as Samuel King and DJ Lola Edo, known for being the founder of the acclaimed queer bar Pamela, along with marketing director Passion Dzenga.

The club's curatorial approach stood out for its impeccable sound design and a musical program oriented towards high-BPM techno, hardgroove, dubstep, and experimental synthesis. The old classrooms were converted into immersive event rooms, while the courtyard and gardens offered a respite at sunrise. Renowned collectives and promoters, such as VBX, Laster Club, or The Gang Is Beautiful, found in its concrete walls the perfect canvas to develop marathon sessions. In fact, the club became the epicenter of famous after-parties, where at seven in the morning clubbers from all over the city converged to keep dancing under the sunlight.

Beyond the music, the space consolidated itself as a safe sanctuary for minorities. The management team prioritized the well-being of the queer community and people of color, establishing strict door policies against any discriminatory behavior. Furthermore, the complex hosted a queer sports school, tattoo studios, and workshops for local artists over these years, demonstrating that a club can be much more than just a dance floor.

The imminent void in the Dutch capital

The imminent closure of Tilla Tec aggravates a latent crisis in the nightlife of the capital of the Netherlands, adding to the growing pressure faced by independent spaces. The loss of venues with extended licenses and purely community-focused approaches drastically reduces options for daring promoters and emerging artists.
