Sama Abdulhadi and the birth of techno in Palestine

The consolidation of electronic music globally is usually supported by solid cultural infrastructures, with cities like Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona or Madrid acting as epicenters. In these places, the existence of iconic clubs like Berghain and an established community facilitates the development of talent. However, the narrative changes drastically when trying to develop a career in territories lacking this foundation, where building a scene from scratch poses a monumental challenge. In this context emerges the figure of Sama Abdulhadi, an artist who managed to introduce and cement techno culture in Palestine. Far from growing up surrounded by synthesizers, her first contact with electronic music occurred while she was studying sound engineering in Beirut. There she discovered a universal musical language that knows no borders. This discovery prompted her to abandon her path in soccer to dedicate herself to creating an electronic community in her homeland, a place where techno was non-existent. The process of establishing this culture in Ramallah involved overcoming enormous logistical and social obstacles. Without local references, the initiative required convincing the population, renting venues, setting up sound equipment and assuming financial risks. Through perseverance, she managed to gather an initial group of followers that transformed into a solid scene. Her work demonstrates that true merit does not always lie in performing before crowds, but in generating a space where music can exist against all odds. The artist's trajectory has not been without controversy. In 2020, the recording of a techno set at the Nabi Musa venue triggered a strong international controversy that led to her arrest, transforming a cultural act into a media event. Despite this, her figure has emerged as a symbol of resistance, comparable in impact to pioneers like Jeff Mills, DVS1 or Richie Hawtin, by demonstrating that the passion for electronic music possesses the strength necessary to flourish in the most unexpected environments.
