From basements to the grand Buenos Aires format

The dance floor at Gascón 1040 inherited a very specific ambition: to take the Buenos Aires LGBTI nightlife out of small spaces and into a large-capacity, visible, and central nightclub in Almagro. Its genealogy connects with Experiment, Line, and Bunker, three names linked to the construction of meeting places for the gay community in Buenos Aires during the eighties and nineties. With the opening of Amerika in 1999, that history took the form of an urban megaclub: a high-capacity venue designed to concentrate dancing, shows, social interaction, and a sense of nightlife freedom that was unusual in the city at the time.

Three dance floors and a mix of codes

The venue is organized around three dance floors, historically known as Continental, Caribean, and Cristal, with a documented capacity of 1,866 people. Amerika's musical approach has always been broader than that of a pure electronic club: the lower level has focused on electronic music, with house sessions and guest DJs, while the upper level has served as a counterpoint for Latin rhythms, pop, reggaeton, and themed nights. This coexistence of codes explains part of its identity: a large-format nightclub where the audience is not defined solely by a musical genre, but by a culture of open, loud, physical, and communal dancing.

An LGBTI icon with urban friction

The history of Amerika has also been marked by the difficult relationship between nightlife, the neighborhood, and diversity. The club suffered closures and conflicts over noise and urban coexistence, and its reopening in December 2006 had visible support from LGBTI rights organizations. That episode consolidated its symbolic dimension: more than just a leisure venue, Amerika became associated with the defense of safe spaces to dance, meet, and occupy the city from dissident identities. In 2008, it was voted the best nightclub in Buenos Aires in a poll by the youth supplement of Clarín, a recognition that reinforced its presence beyond the strictly gay circuit.

AMK in the current agenda

Currently, the venue remains active as AMK, combining its own parties, external events, and club concerts. Its recent programming has alternated pop and reggaeton proposals with names from the international electronic circuit such as Paul van Dyk, Ben Gold, or Woo York, as well as open-bar formats and long-duration sessions until the morning. The experience is supported by classic club architecture: a dense dance floor, high-impact lights, interior bars, a stage, and vertical circulation. Amerika thus retains a unique place in Buenos Aires: it does not function as a minimalist techno temple, but as an inclusive, large-scale nightclub where music, excess, and social diversity remain an inseparable part of the night.
