Three R's for dancing in the open air

With three R's and two Z's, La Terrrazza opened in 1995 inside the Poble Espanyol as an open-air oasis inspired by Ibiza. The Night Sun Group label placed the dance floor in the replica of a 16th-century Balearic farmhouse, on the mountain of Montjuïc, and turned open-air dancing into a hallmark of post-Olympic Barcelona. Before, the area had already known after-hours like Sotavento. It was not born to imitate an industrial venue: it was born to have drinks and move under the stars, with a single maxim that still heads its story: we wake up dancing.

A landscaped venue that survived the regulation

La Terrrazza is not a thundering superclub. It occupies a bounded and landscaped space —with a chill-out zone, private area, and a balcony over the city— designed for about a thousand people. That scale, and the agreement with neighbors, the City Council, and the management of Poble Espanyol, allowed it to meet municipal acoustic control and remain open for three decades, in a city that has been losing venues. Miquel González and Julio A. manage the label today, with a team of about eighty workers. More than four million attendees and about three thousand disc jockeys have passed through its dance floor. The LGTBI public was integrated from the beginning.

Ranking house and international booth

House has been the common thread, without closing the door to techno, disco, or the avant-gardes of each era. The booth has mixed emerging artists with figures such as Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Larry Heard, Moodymann, Kevin Saunderson, Louie Vega, or Purple Disco Machine. In 2010 DJ Mag placed it in the 44th position of its Top 100 Clubs. It even toured and maintained residencies outside of Barcelona as a standard-bearer for the city, always with the Montjuïc terrace as home.

Afternoon and early morning season

It remains a seasonal club. The Sunset Sessions start in mid-April and the Night Parties at the beginning of May: sunsets from 19:00 and nights from Thursday to Saturday until 06:00. The post-pandemic tardeo (afternoon party) coexists with the early morning, with 80s and 90s revival parties and dates like Churros con chocolate. Tickets are managed with RA; there is no re-entry and there is a cloakroom. If it rains occasionally, awnings cover much of the surface. La Terrrazza is not a traveling brand: it is the same physical venue, every summer, inside the Poble Espanyol de Montjuïc.
