Fifty-six meters to the last row

The last row of the upper circle is just 56 meters from the stage. That distance, repeated by the venue itself, summarizes the commitment of The Star Theatre: a 5,000-seat auditorium that seeks the scale of a large concert hall without diluting the proximity. The volume opens in a horseshoe shape—stalls and two circles—across six floors, from the grand foyer on level 5 to the second circle on levels 9 and 10. It is the main hall of The Star Performing Arts Centre, the cultural piece of a fifteen-story complex in Buona Vista, anchored above The Star Vista shopping center and connected to the MRT station by a covered walkway.

The acoustic box floating over one-north

The building opened on November 1, 2012 with an inaugural festival that included Hitman David Foster & Friends. It was designed by Andrew Bromberg (then at Aedas) and the acoustics of the auditorium were resolved by Artec Consultants with a box-in-a-box insulation, so that lobbies and traffic do not enter the mix. The mass of the theater seems suspended over the plazas, ramps, and terraces of the one-north precinct. It is managed by Rock Productions, the business arm of New Creation Church, which uses the hall for its services; the public box office, however, has turned it into one of the most stable amplified music houses in Singapore. The capacity can be reduced by levels: about 1,900 in the stalls and 3,700 if the first circle is added.

A touring PA for three tiers

It was born for pop, musicals, dance, and speech with broadcast quality, not for a purely acoustic repertoire. In 2024, the L-Acoustics system was brought up to touring standard: 12 K1 per side, 4 K2 down-fills per side, and a central cluster of 13 Kara, powered by 25 LA12X controllers. Technical director Daniel Loh presented it as the way to offer festival sound pressure within a seated auditorium. The Stagetec NEXUS STAR digital network and a Shure wireless park—including Axient—cover live, recording, and archiving; at the desk, the house operates DiGiCo SD7 Quantum with Waves processing.

Seated electronics, not a nightclub

There is no resident night or club dance floor. Electronic music enters here in concert format. Pet Shop Boys brought The Super Tour on March 26, 2019. Porter Robinson occupied the horseshoe on November 27, 2024 with the SMILE! :D World Tour: live band and an arc that went from Worlds to Nurture. In the same box, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Tony Bennett, Jason Mraz, Suede, Bloc Party, and Manic Street Preachers have performed. Opening and closing times depend on each promoter. The clearest access remains getting off at Buona Vista (East-West and Circle) and walking about five minutes to the foyer.
