Machines with memory

Few careers have translated the relationship between human being, technology, and future into club material with such coherence. Since the late eighties, Anthony Rother has developed a language in which mechanical percussion, severe basslines, dystopian-toned synthesizers, and vocoder-processed vocals function as a narrative of their own. His music circulates between electro, techno, electropop, and ambient exploration, with a futuristic melancholy that uses science fiction to speak about the present.

Programmed independence

His consolidation arrived with Sex With The Machines in 1997 and Simulationszeitalter in 2000, two decisive works for the European resurgence of electro at the turn of the millennium. In 1998, he founded Psi49Net, a platform with which he protected the aesthetic and editorial autonomy of his work. The virtual project Little Computer People and the 2001 album Electro Pop expanded that vision toward pop electronics with a digital imaginary, while Hacker in 2002 set his hallmarks: machine rhythms, synthetic drama, robotic voices, and questions about control, identity, and technological progress.

Rother later turned that independence into an ecosystem of labels and projects. The Datapunk chapter began with Back Home in 2003 and was consolidated with Popkiller in 2004, a more direct, melodic, and dancefloor-oriented turn that also left essential pieces like Father and Punks. Super Space Model, Popkiller II, Netzwerk Der Zukunft, 3L3C7RO COMMANDO, and Cyberspace Reality expanded a catalog of great conceptual continuity. In parallel, his ambient recordings for FAX +49-69/450464 and Stahl Industries showed a facet focused on texture, space, and synthesis.

Datapunk returns to the stage

After a decade of performing that repertoire all over the world, he closed his Datapunk stage phase at the beginning of 2015 to regain room for experimentation. Subsequent production, developed from his PSI Studio in Offenbach, includes works such as AI Space, Robo Pop, Future Kids, and Exit Utopia, connected to his constant interest in artificial intelligence, automation, memory, and creative autonomy.

In 2026, he reactivated that universe with Anthony Rother presents DATAPUNK 20+ YRS, a 39-track retrospective that brings together classics, unreleased archival material, and new hybrid reinterpretations. The project also returned to festivals and clubs through a format that integrates selection, interpretation, and live manipulation. His contemporary position does not depend solely on the historical weight of his records: he remains an author in motion, capable of treating machines not as retro-futuristic decoration, but as instruments to think about the present and project new forms of electro.
