From Boston to the global house circuit

Armand van Helden is an American DJ, producer, remixer, and songwriter born in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 16, 1970. The son of a father linked to the U.S. Air Force, he spent part of his childhood in countries like the Netherlands, Turkey, and Italy, a mobility that soon broadened his relationship with music. He bought a drum machine at 13 years old and started DJing two years later, initially revolving around hip hop, freestyle, and the club culture that would define his later language.

The pulse of X-Mix, Strictly Rhythm, and the New York dancefloor

After returning to Boston, he combined studies and jobs unrelated to music with sets at local clubs. In 1991, he left his job in legal review to dedicate himself to production at X-Mix Productions, a key environment in his professional development. His residency at The Loft in Boston gave him a regular work platform, and his first breakthrough came with Deep Creed and Stay On My Mind on Nervous Records. Shortly after, he released Move It To The Left as Sultans Of Swing on Strictly Rhythm, a label where he integrated into a decisive generation alongside names like Todd Terry, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, and Masters At Work.

Architect of house with a remix muscle

His sonic signature blends house, garage house, speed garage, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, raw filters, and hard-hitting basslines. In the nineties, he left a deep mark with tracks like Witch Doktor, The Funk Phenomena, and the Old School Junkies project, but his massive leap came with the remix of Professional Widow by Tori Amos. From there, he consolidated himself as one of the great remixers of dance music, working on repertoires by Daft Punk, Janet Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Sam Smith, and other top-tier artists.

Anthems, Duck Sauce, and contemporary relevance

With U Don’t Know Me, Koochy, My My My, I Want Your Soul, and Bonkers alongside Dizzee Rascal, Armand Van Helden turned club house into international chart material without losing a recognizable and direct aesthetic. In 2009, he formed Duck Sauce alongside A-Trak, a duo that took disco house to a global scale with aNYway, Barbra Streisand, Big Bad Wolf, and the album Quack. His career includes two Grammy nominations and a constant presence in clubs, festivals, and platforms like Boiler Room, Defected, Glitterbox, Hï Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Amnesia Ibiza, and Ushuaïa Ibiza. Currently, he remains active as a historic figure of house, alternating international performances, collaborations, reworks of his own catalog, and new releases on reference labels.
