Steel percussion and rave mutation

Blawan's sound functions like a machine under tension: dry hits, metallic textures, corroded basslines, and a way of understanding the club where noise and error become language. His signature was born at the crossroads of British post-dubstep, industrial-pressure techno, and a highly physical rhythmic sensibility, marked by his background as a drummer. Far from following a straight line, he has turned every stage into a mutation: from the broken swing of his early EPs to an increasingly harsh, vocal, and experimental production style.

From the West Indian Centre to the Hessle hit

Raised in Barnsley, in the county of South Yorkshire, Roberts entered music by playing in metal bands and later expanded his imagination in Leeds, where the West Indian Centre introduced him to bass music, dubstep, and sound-system culture. At the beginning of the 2010s, he appeared with Fram on Hessle Audio, a direct entry into one of the key labels of post-dubstep British electronica. Shortly after came works for R&S Records, Hinge Finger, and Clone, in addition to the impact of Getting Me Down and the track Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?, which took his name far beyond the strictly techno circuit.

Ternesc, Berlin, and the shared laboratory

After a period of change, Blawan reinforced his relationship with hardware, modular synthesis, and a rawer writing style. In 2015, he launched TERNESC, a label and platform from which he articulated a series of EPs focused on techno with a rough design, obsessive percussion, and unpredictable structures. Based in Berlin, he maintained parallel activity with projects that expand his vocabulary: Karenn alongside Pariah, based on live performance and analog machinery; Persher, where both approach metal and industrial energy; and Trade alongside Surgeon. He has also released music as Kilner and Bored Young Adults, aliases that have allowed him to work with other speeds and textures.

XL, SickElixir, and a more exposed voice

His first full-length album, Wet Will Always Dry, appeared in 2018 on Ternesc and confirmed a more ambitious studio vision, full of friction, treated vocals, and patterns that deform the traditional idea of functional techno. In 2025, he took a decisive step with SickElixir on XL Recordings, an album built between Berlin, Leeds, Paris, and Lisbon that expands his language toward more broken, visceral, and narrative forms. In the booth and live, Blawan continues to occupy a unique place within contemporary electronica: a producer capable of engaging with the club, noise, British bass, and industrial music without diluting his identity.
