Fire Wire at number nine in the UK

The sharp hit of Fire Wire placed Cosmic Gate at number 9 on the UK Official Singles Chart in August 2001 and at number 3 on the UK Dance Chart. The track, born as the B-side to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, turned a chance meeting in a Cologne studio in the late nineties into one of the most persistent German trance signatures. Two producers from Krefeld, in North Rhine-Westphalia, met in 1997 around the X-IT Records label and, in November 1998, recorded The Drums, the project's first exploration of hard trance. Mental Atmosphere and Exploration of Space—number 12 in Germany and 29 in the UK—entered the charts; the album Rhythm & Drums (2001) reached number 30 on the German chart and No More Sleep (2002) followed with Back to Earth. They left local residencies to handle remixes and a tour that, over time, exceeded one thousand concerts: Ministry of Sound, Privilege Ibiza, and the international circuit.

From Earth Mover to progressive trance

Earth Mover (2006) broke with the hard trance timbre that had defined them. Sign of the Times (2009) and Wake Your Mind (2011) consolidated a more progressive trance, aligned with their sets, now on Black Hole Recordings, their home since the Back 2 Back series. Vocals such as those by Emma Hewitt (Be Your Sound, Not Enough Time), Aruna, and Jan Johnston marked that decade, along with Start to Feel (2014) and the Materia diptych (2017). Remixes for Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, OceanLab, and the theme from James Horner's Avatar expanded the catalog. In 2009, DJ Mag placed them at number 19 in their Top 100, the biggest climb of that edition; they appeared almost continuously until 2015.

Wake Your Mind, MOSAIIK, and the Grammy

The Wake Your Mind label and the weekly show Wake Your Mind Radio, on air since 2014 and having crossed the 500th episode in 2023, turned the name into a trance and progressive platform. Classics like Exploration of Space exceeded 40 million streams on Spotify. The Cosmic Gate Remix of Only Road, by Gabriel & Dresden featuring Sub Teal, received a 2019 Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording: the first for a trance act in that category. MOSAIIK Chapter One (2021) and Chapter Two (2023), the 20 Years [Forward Ever Backward Never] anniversary (2019), and the collaboration Embargo with Armin van Buuren closed out more than two decades as a duo. In 2023 alone, they played 78 dates in 23 countries.

The booth continues, now solo

On February 22, 2026, Stefan Bossems left touring and the project; Claus Terhoeven continues under the name Cosmic Gate. The Perspectives EPs, the single I'm On Fire, and recent dates at A State of Trance and EDC Las Vegas 2026 mark this stage.
