Juliana Huxtable

Shock Value, the club as a laboratory

Shock Value was born in Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn as a trans-inclusive party and a melting pot of sounds. Behind the CDJs, Juliana Huxtable turns sampling and reblogging into a session method: a sway of techno, industrial textures, and club music that seeks to take the dance floor into a state of trance. That same logic—identity, technology, history, and desire—runs through her work as a visual artist, writer, and performer, between New York and Berlin.

Texas, Bard, and the breakthrough at the New Museum

Raised in College Station, Texas, between the jazz at home and the intensity of Baptist gospel, she trained at Bard College and graduated in 2010. After working as a legal assistant in the ACLU racial justice program, she immersed herself in the city's nightlife and in 2013 she DJed at the Studio Museum in Harlem's Uptown Fridays. She is part of the House of Ladosha collective. In 2015, the Surround Audience triennial at the New Museum placed her at the center of the debate: she presented self-portraits from the series Universal Crop Tops For All The Self-Canonized Saints of Becoming and Vogue pointed to her as the star of that edition. The same year, she premiered the performance There Are Certain Facts That Cannot Be Disputed at the MoMA, as part of Performa 15.

From Björk and SOPHIE to PAN and Dekmantel

Her catalog is primarily collaborative and session-based. She remixed Björk's Lionsong (2015), contributed text to Le1f's Blood Oranges and to Total Freedom's Hood by Air soundtrack, and with SOPHIE she formed the duo Analemma, which released Plunging Asymptote and Liminal Crisis on Locus Error, from Nina Kraviz's Trip label; Plunging Asymptote reappeared on SOPHIE's posthumous album. She has signed FACT Mix 706, Dekmantel Podcast 288, a Boiler Room in Brooklyn, and, in 2022, the b2b with JASSS at Dekmantel for Boiler Room. In 2023 she collaborated with Abyss X on Freedom Doll (AD 93) and with Ziúr on Eyeroll; she also participated in Weavings (2022). With Jealous Orgasm and Via App, she promotes the band Tongue in the Mind, debuting on PAN with Pretty Canary and a self-titled EP.

USSYPHILIA and the current DJ booth

Since 2020 she has been based in Berlin, without cutting ties with New York. In 2023 and 2024, Fotografiska Berlin presented USSYPHILIA, her largest European solo exhibition to date. Her work is part of the collections of the Guggenheim and the Studio Museum in Harlem; she has exhibited or performed at Reena Spaulings, Project Native Informant, Artists Space, the ICA in London, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. In 2017 she published Mucus in My Pineal Gland (Wonder and Capricious) and, with Hannah Black, the novel Life (König). In 2019 she received a United States Artists fellowship. Worldwide booking for her DJ dates is handled by Triangle Agency. In 2025 she signed an NTS RUSH of futuristic techno and continues to publish mixes on SoundCloud.
