Origins and The Belleville Three

Kevin Maurice Saunderson was born on September 5, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of nine, he moved with his family to Belleville, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. At his local high school, he forged a transcendental friendship with Derrick May and Juan Atkins. Together, they formed the legendary and pioneering trio known worldwide as The Belleville Three. Inspired by local radio broadcasts, funk, disco, and emerging European electronic music, they began experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers. Although Atkins and May were the first to release their own productions, Saunderson quickly absorbed the technical and creative knowledge of his peers, preparing to leave an indelible mark on the nascent Detroit Techno scene.

Global Success with Inner City

The commercial and cultural impact of Kevin Saunderson exploded in the late eighties with the creation of Inner City, a collaborative project formed with vocalist Paris Grey. Fusing the rhythmic force of techno with the emotion of house and soul, the duo released immortal anthems like Big Fun and Good Life. These tracks not only dominated dance floors across the planet but also reached the top spots on international commercial charts, including Billboard. Inner City managed to bring the raw sound of the underground to the masses, proving that electronic music could be simultaneously avant-garde, deeply danceable, and accessible to a global audience.

E-Dancer, Reese, and KMS Records

Far from settling for massive success, Saunderson explored the darker and more purist sides of techno under various aliases, with E-Dancer and Reese being the most acclaimed. His Reese alias gave rise to the iconic Reese bass line, a dense sound that would later become a fundamental element for the development of jungle and drum and bass in the United Kingdom. In 1987, he founded his record label, KMS Records, a vital platform that has documented the evolution of techno and house. Through KMS, Saunderson has boosted the careers of fundamental artists and released productions that are now considered absolute classics.

Nicknamed The Elevator for his crucial role in the expansion of electronic music, Kevin Saunderson's legacy is colossal.
